I dunno, I think they are getting Carpenter comparisons because of the darker sound on this album with more arpeggiated/sequenced synth parts than on TCH. Lots of synth bands get compared to Carpenter if you have a dark-sounding arp with synth strings on top, it's just a lazy music journalist ...
