More evidence that genre is strictly a product/market technique. Which it is useful in that way because it would be really fucking hard to find any music without these labels.

But I still disagree with most of them

my problem with a lot of metal is the vocals, also the tracks usually aren't that dynamic and melodic as other types of music, and the production on most of metal is pretty uninspired, going for just the generic pummeling instead of giving the track some oomph in the low end or doing anything interesting.

Only way I've found I can get into metal is through other genres, via jazz like Naked City and John Zorn's stuff and experimental rock which danced around the idea and sound of metal but never fully went into it, like Boredoms and newer indie rock band called Whirr.

Only metal band I really enjoyed, like I said, was Boris, and a lot of people don't really consider them metal. More just hard rock.

Try to listen to some classical instrumental metal/rock tunes. Stuff like Satriani, Vai... Especially the mellow songs ! If you turn down the "pitch" at a refrain that you enjoy, it's probable that you will get almost something similar to the "84 Pontiac Dream" (regarding the mood/spirit, and the sound) :o

Because a good amount of metal is about the technical aspect and not immediate melody or emotion.. which to me is unappealing. But I certainly have heard stuff that falls under the term metal and I fucking love it.

I have tried.
The production on the stuff sounds so terribly dated, and not in a good nostalgic way, and the melodies don't exactly do it for me.

I think (keep on going back to 'em) I like Boris because they do blues rock at most times, their riffs are so damn funky.

Mastodon are definitely up there in terms of well thought/crafted metal music. They have a nice mix of virtuosity and song writing prowess, also some groove and conceptual thinking.

I dig everything I've heard by them so far. I need to get into their stuff more.

Black Sabbath are so good! Give them another go.

I agree with Autechre, never been a fan.. to glitchy for me. Still can see why people love them though.

I like the way this sounds like the music would. ie. truly fucking awful and like a man falling down some stairs in a sack.
I quite like the idea of Ambient Handbag as a genre.

I liked them in the really early days , when idm was starting to show the first green shoots of branching away from the tacky rave culture that became less about music , and more about E rushes and snare rushes , but , they've taken the "intelligent" part of the idm acronym and stretched it to the point where they should just trade their synths for bunsen burners and a few petri dishes.
I suggested this on another forum where they are revered as " idm gods " and , well , the town came to meet me with wooden stakes and burning torches.

My tastes and personal musical requirements are very basic and simple. I like to listen to music with some actual music in it. Autechre may have a better studio than me.......they may have access to better mastering engineers and a far better promotions machine , and yeah , a better kitlist , but , if im gonna be hung as much for a sheep as I would for a lamb , i'll stick my neck out and say my " actual " musical content , is better.

Yep. I said that.

Thats my opinion.
If anyone else wants to have a listen , go to www.soundcloud.com/2ndMOUSE
Every track is completely different.
Thanks to those who take the plunge....

They were just in the right place at the right time when there were very very few people doing this stuff , wheras now.......even my dog could almost join some loops together........

I like Autechre a little because they create sounds that are both quite unworldly and whose structures you are unlikely to encounter somewhere else and at the same bear some kind of structural sophistication. Merzbow, for example, creates unworldly sounds yet he seems to have a quite crude approach to making the sounds that he makes. As a computer programmer I've dabbled with computer programs that generate music and sounds and beats and from that perspective an album like Confield is pretty interesting to me because Autechre utilized generative synthesis for that album. But in reality I never listen to Autechre much. I'd say it's mostly interesting music to play every once in a while, not beautiful music per se (although they do have some standout melodic tracks).

I understand they are pioneers and such, and I do like a good measure of their output but I also rarely, if ever listen to them. Even as a huge noise fan I find a lot of their music to be overtly technically orientated, its hard to articulate but I like noise within a measured context I suppose, something like Yellow Swans, which is comparable to a psychedelic continuing ball of energy, whereas some Autechre music seems to have this almost esoteric quality I cannot seem to relate with.

I totally respect their pioneering vision and the music they create, but it will, probably, never relate to me on a higher level than interesting ideas and sounds. There is interesting sounds, then there is actually doing something structurally or aesthetically innovative with those sounds.

Maybe I need to give them another go, each time it is sort of lost on me.

edit: Another small point I find with their music, is the fact that I find it to be very much of its time. By that I mean they were necessary, in fact, hugely important in the development of electronic music -away from rave culture - as we know it today, but I find it to be much like many artistic and musical movements. I.e necessary for the continuing and developing musical spectrum but kind of lost in the past as more interesting and cohesive ideas have developed from their groundbreaking work.

Okay that wasn't a small point but I think you all get the jist (I hope)

I'll go ahead and say Autechre are probably my most favourite band ever. I immensely love everything they have ever released, with the exception of only Incunabula and Draft 7.30. Incunabula is actually the only release by them that I find dated. It has not aged well at all. As for the Draft... it's somewhat daft. :) But everything else by them I can only call brilliant.

Theirs is music for the mind rahter than for the body or the soul. They are the celebration of cold thought over emotion. And sometimes the process may matter more than the end result, and naturally this is not to everyone's taste.

I guess it helps being an Autechre head if in school you liked maths or physics more than literature or history. :)

I hated maths/ math in school.

If Music is Math, then I should hate music too, which I don't of course

i'm another one who likes Autechre a lot, but don't tend to listen to them too often.
