again, I'll ask: how can music be pretentious? how can music pretend to be one thing or another. it can't. it simply is what it is. the pretense is a matter of your perception.

I'm not attacking you or getting upset. i'm challenging you to articulate your position which it doesn't seem you're able to do.
for frith's sake.. are we hung up on a technicality here? the music is CONTRIVED and tycho is PRETENTIOUS. that clear things up a little? i dont like the sunrise projector album..i like science of patterns and adrift...my opinion is sunrise projector sucks..so if all of his music =100% i like 40% of it. hope this helped in whatever possible way that it matters.

Pretentious music = music that is both pretty and contentious.

Tycho seems to be quite a sensitive subject. I tried to like him too, but was unsuccessful. "There's something missing" is a very fitting phrase. It doesn't possess the same emotion in an organic way, but rather it seems he tries a bit too hard to put off a vibe that belongs to those who put it off by default and without effort. That's what could be seen as "contrived". There's just not much substance to it and it doesn't resonate in the same, natural way that BoC does for me.

i'll say that the only artist worthy of being a true BoC clone is a French-Canadian guy named Galerie Stratique. He's very good, i recommend strongly.

come to think of it, another is Bibio. He's got a very valid spin on the whole BoC-nostalgia-decay thing, where it's more like folk than electronic. definitely pulls it off by going in his own direction.

I think this sums up Tycho pretty well. 'Sunrise projector' is awful, pretty much BoC's Bocuma/Kuoni Industries looped over some watered down chillout backing for 13 songs. Very contrived and lacking in substance.

That said a few of his later tracks i have, 'Adrift' and 'The Daydream', are actually fairly listenable chillout fare, if still a bit lukewarm.

Tycho always really bothered me, there is a big difference between inspiration and duplication.
Black Moth Super Rainbow started out sounding very BOC at first and has since evolved into it's own unique beast. I love everything BMSR's mastermind TOBACCO does now, plus their live shows are amazing.

you put that well, thats pretty much how i'd view this Tycho fella, don't own any of his work but have heard most of it. Bibio, for a while, maybe but minor, and knows his own direction yea spot on.
I like Tychos art side though, sometimes repetitive but interesting.
i can't think of any Good clones as a clone in my view is not good enough for my ears so i tend to avoid and don't give it the time.

of COURSE tycho was influenced by boc, but it is a beatiful gift and BOC is sharing that gift with tycho and tycho sharing it back with us. He darned talented too. He must be huge boc fan, callin him a biter maybe too harsh.

of COURSE casinovsjapan!

I have a huuuuuge list of clones not mentioned, but looks like you guys already got alot to download.

I'll just post 1 track.

I dont/never have ever considered the track/album/artisist a boc clone at all, but there is something I feel in this one track, that only bocs made me feel. It might be my favorite 1 track of all time, even above my favorite band boc. I consider it just hiphop but im sure its got 20 opposing microgenre labels.

Anyway, track is Sunday Seance, almum Music By Cavelight, artist Blockhead.

Keith jarrett koln concert 1975 sample FTW!
...best 2 seconds of live improv piano ever recorded. FACT!

Renaissance can you hear me sample FTW!

guys a frickin genius.

I would imagine most of the artists mentioned in this thread would hate to be labelled as BoC 'clones'. If you know these people personally or have read interviews with them where they've said "i am influenced by BoC" then fair enough, but presumably they're just trying to make music.

BOC clones? seriously? so anybody else who makes ambient music is a BOC clone? how insulting. a lot of the artists mentioned here sound nothing like BOC, theyre simply making ambient sounds. it's like saying all rock bands are Metallica clones or something equally ridiculous. BOC are not the be all and end all of ambient music, there are many other artists out there doing the same genre, doesn't make them a BOC clone. if youre going to use that logic then you may as well call BOC an eno clone or some such. perhaps this thread should really be titled 'other ambient artists you like'. now dont get me wrong, i personally think that within this genre BOC are one of the best, but theyre far from the only ones and it certainly doesn't make all the other artists clones of BOC. someone like Helios for example releases under various names, his real name (keith kennif) and goldmund. go give 'the malady of elegance' (an album of purely solo piano compositions) by his goldmund moniker a listen then come back and tell me he's a clone!

this thread is shameful.

You know what brings a grin? If not what you meant^... KJ sampled by electronic musicians into awesomess considering his views on electronic instruments at the time he played it.

Id love to read/hear his review....

Yeah...calling CVsJ a boc clone made me uncomfortable, but clone in this context is more " a boc fan would like this too, and not "copycat". I've heard "boc is a CVsJ clone!" somewhere.

anyways, dont be mad if you're a boc clone, at LEAST your the best clone to be. Thats not even an insult is it? i mean not like ur toppin 'em

not at all, you're exaggerating it a bit there.
several ambient artists don't jump into boards of canadas pockets and try to generate what they think might go down well, its sounds contrived and obviously listen too much and think too much. clones fail at the end of day, we all want the real deal. Metallica had them too in their early years but as the years passed, either the other artists found their own way or broke up. note: found their own way. theres always going to be the few bands/artists who jump on the bandwagon and enjoy the temporary fruits of the trend, they'll either find their own way with possibility of becoming succesful but if they don't, they'll remain under the radar as mediocre, every single time.

so so easy to imitate, no so easy to innovate, those that do are talented and it comes to them naturally, just be yourself.
