Earlier stuff such as Incunabula, Amber, and Tri Repetae. If you listen to all their stuff chronologically, you'll see how they developed from an ambient techno duo to weird manufacturers of abstract noise and aural graffiti.

I bet if someone listened to something like Untilted first, they'd be wicked befuddled.

That's exactly what I did, and I only needed af few listens to acustom myself to this extraordinary music.
I love Autechre, they're amazing, their impact on music worldwide is astounding!

EP7 seems like a nice middle of the road release.

i agree, start at the beginning. it really does help to work your way up to albums like LP5 and Draft7.30. Those might be my two favorite, but they are probably not the best places to start. Their first three might sound a bit dated these days, but they are full of charm and emotion. I still listen to incubabula and tri repetae quite a bit. and yeah, i love the idea of aural graffiti. if you think about a hip hop beat as a phrase, then fuck it up until its barely legible. theres your graffiti! autechre is amazing.

by the way, listen to them on vinyl if you can afford it.

edit: if you are looking for a good middle of the road release, i'd say either tri repetae or LP5.

The best release to start with is Tri-Repeatae++; not for the album, but for the two wonderful bonus ep's: Anvil Vapre + Garbage.
'Secod Peng' is probably my favourite track; very insistent! PIOBmx19 is an other great one track, that has probably influenced BoC (for the chopped rhythmic vocals).

Then if you think this music is a bit too messed-up, then you should get Amber instead, and if you think it sounds a little outdated, then you should get either ep5 or their masterpiece: Confield.

Personally, and it's just a matter of taste, I don't like much Ciastic Slide and ep7.

Maybe it is best to start from the first few albums, I got quaristice first and hated it for a while. It took about a month or 2 before it started to click for me

I just listened to Tri Repetae for the first time (yea, i know) and OH MY GOD! I absolutely adore Amber but Tri Repetae just crushes it. Stunning, subtle melodies floating across harsh mechanical rhythms - the perfect match. Clipper, Stud and Rsdio are the ones that are doing it for me right now but it's a very strong album. I really need to work my way though their material chronologically unless someone has any other suggestions?

Untitled was the first Autechre album I heard. Befuddled? Just a bit. I thought it was utter crap to be honest but as I dug deeper into their work and began to realise what they were about (sort of), I went back to it and it made a lot more sense.

Like others have said start with Incunabula and work your way through. I immediately loved their latest album but if i'd had heard that one first im sure things would have sounded different. Its amazing really when you think about it. Its almost like a puzzle game with their music. If you try and rush by skipping to the end, you'll never understand it

I LOVE Autchere. My dad just got me the Gantz Graf EP. A lot of my friends think i'm a nut for listening to them. HA!

Gonna bump this thread since it's the original Autechre thread. Friend of mine recommended me to start off with Tri Repetae. It's about a six for me, I feel some tracks such as Stud and Rsdio go on longer than they should be, but I know Autechre's compositions can be described as minimalist, so it's not too bad.

...but then there's tracks like Leterel, Rotar and EUTOW. HOLY SHIT EUTOW. IT'S PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL YET HAUNTING TRACKS I'VE HEARD IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

I wonder what album of theirs I should try next? I tried listening to Incunabula a while ago, was kind of bored of it, but perhaps I could go back and try again???? Idk if there's any Autechre fans that want to recommend me something I'd appreciate it!

Imo Amber is their most accessible album, but certainly not their best. Also, LP5 is fucking incredible and shouldn't be that hard to get. Chronological order is probably still the best way to go though. You will need to give it time, let the albums sink in your brain. Give albums a few spins in a row (with some pauses in between of course lol) and your brain will start to fill in the blanks. Autechre are certainly challenging to get into, but also one of the most rewarding when stuff starts to click.
