Of all the ‘first listens’ ahead, I’m most excited to hear Inferno on tape.

Strangely enough me too.

I don't have the greatest tape player. I have thought about picking one of these up:

I actually have quite of few cassette tapes and have picked some more up in recent years. However I can't justify throwing down 160 bucks for a tape player. I fully expect some charm out of the play through on my aging tape deck.

just reversed the whole album in garage band and gave it a spin just to see if there was something to hear, and astonishingly i didn't hear jack shit

Really?? What about the percussion sounds in the 'Hydrogen Helium Lithium' intro segment?

oh certainly things sound cool, and I can tell that some of the sounds are reversed in a normal playthrough. and that in particular was probably the most rewarding bit to my more novice ears! a fun straightforward sort of drum loop
i welcome others to give it a shot. certainly tracks 1-5 seem like they might have the most to offer on a reverse run. Prophecy @ was the most frightening
oh, Introit's main synth line seems palindromic.

Yup, you caught that as well? On my very first listen (during the YouTube premiere) I noticed that the Introit notes are a palindrome. But I'm a sucker for the backwards stuff. Geogaddi backwards was a fixation of mine a few years ago, lol.
That's why I'm surprised there aren't more bits on this album that sound cool in reverse!
I will check out Prophecy though... "Frightening?" You've sold me on it! Lol.

you should give it a shot! hell, i'm doing it while working, so i'm sure some stuff is breezing right past me

definitely try it all out. i noticed a few of the vocal samples in earlier tracks 'felt' like they might be saying something when played in reverse, but i realized they were already forward in a normal playthrough, so I didn't think much of it
re: Introit palindrome - good ear! I only caught it on the reverse playthrough

I didn't buy the tape cos all the tape machines in my house were chosen for their low or otherwise interesting quality. But I might record the album to a vintage 1970s C90 anyway and play it on one of the dictaphones I've got with a half speed mode and a wheel for fine speed control. Everything that comes out of that has a grain that gets stuck in your teeth, I've used it a lot. And I'm sure something like that was used on that first drone on Prophecy, the one that sounds super deep.

I love a good tape machine, but I would avoid anything new like that (though it does look nice). There's only one factory/design of cassette mechanism and they're all a bit cheap and rubbish. I certainly wouldn't pay much for a new one.
Get a vintage deck if you can, there are always people throwing them away!

I imagine that melody was made using an up-down arpeggiator, so any combination of notes put into that would be a palindrome.
Good spot!

Not sure if this has been noticed elsewhere, but it looks like someone might have uploaded the original footage from the listening sessions to YouTube (which would include the unreleased video from You Retreat In Time And Space) but it was quickly taken down by Warp:

It's been uploaded to archive.org
The full visuals that were shown at the listening sessions it seems.
70 minute, 720p

Actually it looks like much more than that. I had thought the listening sessions was mainly just the rotating hexagons. This has a lot more than just that. Not sure what it is.
As far as I can see, it's Robert Beatty's video for Prophecy at 1420MHz, and then continues .... ??

Good call. I may try and hit up some second had store or garage sales to see what I can find. I kind of had the same thought in that I would be paying for aesthetics and design rather than quality.
