Do you guys also feel the song builds up to the voice part at 3:19? (with the intro starting at 3:03)
Makes me wonder, the way he altered the voice and make it sound like gabble is a bit like Windowlicker, something I only have heard Aphex doing? Although it only is some jabber I feel like humming along. The melody of it is blissfully.

I remember the nonsensical chanting on some Orbital songs but not in the same way as the Aphex voices sound synthetic. Anyway, I hope the many voices Aphex speaks about appearing on Syro do have the same vibe.

Radiohead is the only other act Ive heard making similar voices and they were directly influenced. Its a weird sound innit. Like he somehow treats it to make it sound like the voice is coming from an animatronic larynx on his desk. In parts he seems to have stripped out all the consonants...

It is a strange yet really cool and funky.

After scouring over that intense gear list on the album artwork (if RDJ ever has a garage sale fuck me that would be an event), you can easily match up some of the equipment used to the track names which is fun. And after checking out some items on there i had never heard of, i was quite impressed and had some jaw drops.

2 x synton syntovox vocoders. Whooa. Maybe how he achieves some of the vocal effects?

I think it might be because this is a "popular" thread that it stays up a little higher.

And also, the thing is that no, not everyone here loves RDJ's work. I think a lot of people would tell you things like "Well SAW I and II are great, but everything else isn't very good" or "I like Windowlicker/Come to Daddy and not much else", and to be fair he isn't BoC. He's prolific as hell to a certain degree, but Richard doesn't really give a shit about what he puts out. He said a long time ago (and said it again recently) that his music gets made purely because he enjoys making it and that it's a hobby for himself. That would probably directly contrast with Boards. Not to say they don't enjoy making it, but the reason you get such a cohesive, polished, flowing record like Geogaddi is because they made it so for other people to enjoy and for reception from others.

I certainly don't rank RDJ up as high as other artists I listen to (and I'm not even in the boat of acting like he was breaking ground in the early 90's because IMO FSOL was doing what he was doing far, FAR better at the same exact time - just not on Warp) but it doesn't matter, because he is important.

He is directly related to Boards not just by label but by his era and his musical connections, and however you feel, the release of an Aphex Twin record after this much time has gone by is something important to this whole musical scene, at least important enough to be pinned and discussed as an important moment in time, whether it's on WATMM or Twoism.

not honestly that excited about 'syro' or whatever it's called. rdj is a great musician, and I love many of his tunes, but his aesthetic comes off as very annoying at times (just my opinion). I respect much of what he does, but (especially) adding his ugly grinning mug to everything gets very grating. reminds me of that Alfred guy from cracked magazine. I can't help but picture his grinning face every time I'm listening to his tracks, but then again that's probably what he wants.

honestly I'm more excited for only 2 records coming out this year: new winged victory for the sullen, and christ.!

That's an interesting point of view. I find FSOL sound very dated to me now. I loved Lifeforms and Papua New Guinea is obviously still a great tune, but I think their digital sound feels very rooted in the '90s. Same with Leftfield. The Aphex releases from the same time still sound pretty unique, with many sounds I still can't date.

I'll admit that I may be slightly biased after I saw FSOL interviewed around the time of ISDN and they came across as really humourless and up themselves.

It's that playfulness that I am locked onto. I mentioned in an earlier post it's this dry humour in his music that makes me laugh and gives a glimpse into the reality he just loves making music for himself.

I saw a photo of him doing random street drumming with random cymbals and percussive things. I love the fact he would do that just for his own self enjoyment.

Totally agreed. It's all about the humor. One of my favorite musical moments of all time is the random duck call at 5:18 in Last Rushup 10. The first time I heard that I almost laughed myself to death.

HAHA. I love that duck call. It just works so well. In 4, the sample at around 1:31 and 3:06 - "are we good? "yeah". That always makes me laugh too. Such good timing before the beat kicks back in.
