King Crimson is a good answer but the band had changed a BIT. Tool is just a different machine that takes TIME to make music when it's the time. And just like ALL bands in history, the firsts years are always the best. So, after 6 years of waiting a reply from a (IMO) ultra boring Campfire, I am just waiting to hear (or see) that I was wrong ((:-)))

Do you think MDG tells them "Hey your fans' patience is waining!". Or are they blissfully unaware?

Then again, what are we going to do if we get too impatient? Not buy it when it arrives? I don't think so.
BoC has us in a prime position here, most of us are going to buy that freaking album no matter how long they put it off or how bad it is.

People seem to forget one thing... artists don't make music for their fans... they make music for their own quest of craftsmanship and creation, well true artists do, I know Dali would have signed anything at one point for a 100 bucks, but I don't think the Sandison's gives a rat's ass about making music for anyone but themselves and their close friends. Fans are nice but they don't dictate your course unless your band has run it's course and you're just in for the money.

I am somewhat comforted in the fact that the lengthy time means that they are making the music according to THEIR standards and not to please a bunch of people out there on forums.

They have to make money somehow. I don't suppose they are working at Burger King. The hundreds of dollars I spent on CD's, vinyl and merchandise went in someones pocket.

I think the bigger question is - how many artists historically have taken a hiatus of as long as six years and still produced music to the level of quality and inspiration of their initial genius? Sure, some have long careers but it seems like most musical flames dim after 5-10 years. What are some counter examples of musicians/bands who have equaled their original output in quality after breaks of five years or more?

I don't think they have a shitty attitude towards their fans at all. The fact that they're seclusive is part of what makes BOC cool, and they know that.

Some people here are living in clouds. Artists don't have that ABSOLUTE liberty creation that some may think they have. The Labels are the one taking risk when deciding whether or not an album will see the day; ask Fiona Apple for only one example. Further more, internet has dramatically changed the business pattern when risking the precious MONEY. The Cult was asked to work the Peace album all over again => Electric. The artists are obliged under the terms of their own contracts, and most always, the terms include a number of releases in an amount of time.

Maybe BOC are living it their own way, like they want it to be. NOW. But I think it wasn't always like that. They had a record contract with Skam/Warp.

Artists NEVER HAD the Absolute liberty of creating only what they wanted. That's why producers, mixers and all the set up is surrounding them. How many times the music has been changed before the pressing while you think that this version was the first and only one ???!

And I was forgetting about the rights of their own catalogue. Artists are so totally doing what they want that they are oblige to sell their rights on their songs by the terms of their contract to the ones risking the money for the profit. Wow, if that's not liberty creation, I wonder what it is...

I hope the next BOC turns out metal (Where's that damn rock emoticon)

This is actually a very good question. To be honest, after such a long gap I don't know that I would put down money for a new BoC album without hearing it first. To make an analogy - I don't know if it would be like Michael Jordan when he came back after the first retirement and won more championships or like the MJ who came back over the hill and on the downswing.

I purchase about 20 albums a year and its with the intention of supporting the artists to continue to make new music. I have to be pretty hyped about an artist to buy it ears unheard, which seems like too much of a risk when I have no idea what direction the music they are making six years later takes(if they are indeed creating any at all). With the lack of any connection to the fan base it makes me even less inclined to pre-order 'just because'.

Simply because I dont think they have the ability to not impress me with anything they do.

Hi all. New here smy first post Long long big time fan of boc. I have this feeling the new cd hoping a double cd or maybe even the boxset so i've heard and my thoughts are it will either consist combination of upbeat (similar to 'dead dogs two') dark and ambient type stuff. That's just my input.
