most everyone here cares too much about "The Message" to understand the message. some of what you believe must be let go for you to know. some of what you "know" must be set free for you to see.

So, here's a quick update on "MBV Drone"
Song is from at LEAST early 1980s, as we recently found a song that samples it from the 2000s.
I emailed the guy behind it and he said this in response:
"i have no idea...it was probably a snippet of muzak off of the airwaves in the early 80's. this is not it."
the track in question is "Vivian & Ondine" by William Basinski.

I don't think they're remotely anywhere close, other than a similar progression.. The MBV drone sounds like a heavily treated and layered guitar, whilst vivian and ondine is an orchestral recording on tape slowed way down. I completely forgot about that Basinski track though, what a lovely piece

I was thinking that quite possibly the version we have is a cover/interpolation of this original track.

Is that message from Basinski? Seems he's telling you his piece doesn't sample or re-interpret anything.

Did you send him the snippet from SxT? Sounds like he's just guessing it could be from early 80's.

Cool you got an answer from Basinski. I can hear the similarity in his track. His piece sounds more like it samples something close to classical or lounge, hence "muzak".

19. [36:24] ?
20. [38:42] Boards of Canada - Aquarius / Slave to the Rhythm Remix (ft. vocals from 'Imagination - Just an Illusion')

i'm trying to get a refresher on this section. is there anything interesting i might've missed when combing over this section? its got to be one of my favorite moments on this release. SxM imo is such a gift from the boys. any obscure info would be cool, etc.

I want to believe the Slave to the rhythm pick was because it was a notorious track by Grace Jones. Partly for being a bit of a career albatross that she became known especially for when she had a LOT of other music. But also because she spent so long getting it right, doing remix after remix that there was basically an album worth of remixes.

My head canon on this is boc nodding at aquarius being the equivalent for them. Which I think would be funny. But then, it might just be cos it fucking slaps.

Nice nod to BoC/Societas with the music choice on Warp's latest IG post.

It appears someone may have sourced "U1" after all this time. Allegedly its called "Echolocation" from artist Florentine.

As someone mentions in the Reddit thread, I too always assumed this was unreleased BoC! Either way, always glad to see more of Societas uncovered.
