Cool man, good to hear. Personally, I think it's really shallow to draw conclusions about folks, based on what they like, so I don't know why I did that... At the end of the day, who gives a fuck? Know what I'm saying? Back to the topic of this thread. At the end of my FB run, I began to feel like I was inside the brain of all the active users I was friends with. It was no longer a place about friendships or connections, it became a very dark place. If you are still on there, notice how the media constantly shows up on your feed even if you don't follow it. FB wasn't always like this, it began after they changed a privacy setting where if someone liked or commented on a news story it would show in the feed. Total mindfuck! Some days I could ignore it, but others I found myself getting sucked in. Total waste of energy. Then I realized how fd up it was to put your life on the Internet like that, to where nothing is sacred anymore. Maybe I'm old school, I don't know, I just couldn't hang anymore. I've found myself getting sucked into discussions of real world events that way, but I've got better at not falling for it now. Many times I've written out a long reply and deleted it though, thinking "what's the point?" By the way, Facebook periodically saves the contents of your comment box, so even if you do this, it knows what you were *about* to post. Think about that...

I'd love to break the Facebook habit. It's a cancer and I don't say that lightly either.

Been off of FB since October last year and don't miss it in the slightest.

They lure you in by making it seem like there is no alternative. It is proven that social networking is a massive cause of addiction and anxiety in people. If there are people you don't wish to lose contact with on there what I do is use the messenger and nothing else. It takes restraint but i just click on my own profile so as to avoid the news feed and open it like it is just another instant messenger, made everything that isn't my profile picture private and never commented or liked anything again.
It is pretty damn freeing, I agree.

This is exactly what I do too. I have no interest whatsoever in the news feed, my attention is already divided too much as it is and most of the items are banal.

My only Internet presence is this account. Shock Horror!

YouTube and Twitter I browse daily, but it's the right decision for me not to sign up to them.

(Edit: Actually I just realised, instead of posting this on rodox_head's 'keeping up in the modern age' topic I decided to bump a 7 year old thread back from the dead. Who knows, I found this good reading, maybe there is more discussion to be had here.

I can't say I have.
My immediate and close family are hardly active on social media, at least to my knowledge. Also apart from the listed above I have very little need for the internet. I spend most of my free time reading, writing and learning info on various subjects.

What about yourself NorthSaturnian? Are you as technologically destitute as I am?

There also wouldn't be the internet. Straight up, I would be dead from suicide today if it weren't for the internet. The ONLY lasting friendships I've EVER had in my life have all formed on the internet. I don't fit in, in society. This post stuck out to me. I don't fit in anywhere, and the internet is no exception (even on this site I feel like an outsider). If it weren't for the ease of access to music, art, and philosophical discourse that the internet has been able to provide I would have most likely committed suicide long ago, or just be an overall shittier person. I love that if I'm out and about and a certain angle of a building stands out to me I can just take my phone out and try and capture that. I love that I can access various types of music, even old and obscure trance singles that have been long out of print, and feel an energy that I would have never had the opportunity on my own. I love that there are free programs like GIMP where I can attempt to take advantage of the aforementioned aspects and construct how I see things in my own amalgamated mind.

Don't get me wrong, I have my fair share of gripes with the current day internet, but I'm just along for the ride.

Just disregard my last post, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
