Time scales with BoC are so glacial. MDG hasn't commented since 2015. M&M supposedly spend 15 hours a day making music. They know they have dedicated fans who are dying to hear a single snippet and they're over there just living it up in their studio, smirking mischievously. I'm of two minds about it: first it is super refreshing that there are still people out there who eschew the hyper connectedness of modern life; but second it is super frustrating because these guys have a gift that they share so sparingly. I think my mind would explode if they started dumping their archives onto soundcloud (as it did when RDJ did the same)! As it is, I am convinced that most of the still-unknown tracks on SxT are old BoC.

It was just a post discussing M&M's companies (which are public record in Scotland, I won't mention them here), info which includes official birthdates which do not match what is in wikipedia, as well as asset and certain family information. It's info that Mexicola and Twoism don't want widely distributed, that's all.

Slight correction. It's information the band themselves have asked us to remove. Although to be honest, I entirely agree with them.

People like to look for clues. The band have cultivated an enigmatic mystique that does result in this sometimes, I think. But if they have asked that we not discuss or distribute this info, I'm happy to oblige

Art is an incredibly personal thing and the public is not entitled to what any artist creates. That's pretty much the long and the short of it, IMO. The idea that they're "smirking mischeviously" in their studio while callously withholding their best work is... Silly. It's not about us.

Boards of Canada is not only my favorite band, they're my favorite artists in any medium. Words can't describe how much I treasure what they've released. But let's not view their music like some kind of commodity missing from the market, which they're obliged to produce and sell.

There's a reason they have not released any new music yet. Withholding that which they don't believe is for public consumption is part of their process as artists. I feel that it's kind of contradictory to love their art, and then criticize the same process by which it's created.

You shouldn't take my comments as criticism. I love BoC, and I love the mystery that they cultivate. I get what you are saying, but I strongly believe that BoC have cultivated this mystique. The mystery is wholly a part of their 'art,' and there is no way they don't know that or understand that a fan could be (amusingly) frustrated by their comments that they create "400 tracks" between Geogaddi and TCH, most of which we'll never hear.

I've read through all their interviews - the words that they have publicly shared with their fanbase - and it is clear that they take pleasure in being mysterious, in having music that no one can listen to, and that they feel that part of what makes BoC special is in the lack of accessibility to some of their body of work. In one interview available on Bocpages, they actually say something along the lines of "Boards of Canada is as much about what we don't do as what we do."

I don't think imagining them smirking mischievously is silly. I think it's cool. I think it's part and parcel of the image they have cultivated. The last thing that BoC are, in my opinion, are snobby artists. Don't get me wrong, I am by no means a fan who demands that a band release all their stuff. I'm just saying it would be pretty cool if they did

I really just think they don't want to release anything other than their best work, and if they didn't have that attitude, they wouldn't be the same band we know and love. That's all I'm saying.

I think that's what they mean when they say "Boards of Canada is as much about what we don't do as what we do."

Yes and no. Art ultimately needs to be shared. That is demonstrated by the creator and creation. That disposition in us to want to share is at the foundation of creativity. We respond to nature, and celebrate it.... collectively. I do however think it's important to push up against what's prevalent now in our society when it comes to rushing art for commercial success. BoC are simultaneously refreshing and frustrating.

And couldn't you see them doing one final album at the end of their ride? Artists never stop working, eg. Lucian Freud.

I mean, I agree somewhat...BUT...there are tracks on OT1, 2, and r35tt that are among the very best work they've done. Tracks that are FUCKING AMAZING. There are unknown tracks in the live shows that are available that are among the very best work they've done. Tracks that are FUCKING AMAZING. Tracks that they have played ONCE - and that non-attendees were 'never meant to hear' at this point. And while I understand that artistic sentiment, I am SUPER thankful that these tracks are available. It would be tragic to never have heard these.

So I think that it's more than they only want to release their best work. They have other philosophies that they are following. I'm happy to follow along, but I do think it is clear that they actively cultivate speculation about their unheard work. The cool thing about BoC, as seen by the music that has leaked, is that there is actual substance to the speculation. I think the band have loads of A+ tracks that they simply haven't seen fit to release, not because it's not the best work, but for other reasons. This adds to their mystique, and they know it.

yeah it was changed late August i believe

i haven't paid super close attention to this thread so was just wondering if that was his last login, cause if so that would've been interesting

NorthSaturnian is correct, he logged in on Jan 6th.

He visited on 3 separate occasions yesterday. Most likely communicating with mods about the privacy issue that was flagged. Although it is suspiciously close to March 2nd which is of course our next date of interest
