In all fairness, the jabs continued to come in. Let’s cap it off and stop trying to get the last parting shot.

Is there any other date we are speculating on, or is pretty much a clean slate now??

Well we still have April 6th (Pioneer 11 launch) and April 27th (Pioneer 10 last telemetry) to look forward to, but in all honesty, I thought yesterday would be the day, if any,.. simply due to the Pioneer 10 launch arguably being the most significant anniversary of the three, not to mention the fact that there was a considerable build-up of activity on the approach for this one (YouTube profile change, FB post, numerous mdg logins, etc.)

I think we should wait it out a bit more and see what Warp does next. We got 8 weeks before the Squid album drops. Surely there's something between that :)

Especially since Boc are supposedly back at Hexagon Sun

The dates have always been random shots in the dark. BoC makes some minor update and suddenly any numerical value remotely attached to it becomes a prospective release date, despite them literally never using numerology to hide clues about release dates for their albums.

Like, as elaborate as the Tomorrow's Harvest ARG was, there was a clear start point, a clear goal, and the clues provided the login to a new website, not an obscure hint at a release date.

I think there's a good chance the Pioneer Plaque is a thematic nod to whatever they're working on, like the mushroom cloud pic on the Warp BOC Page was for TH, but there is no reason to believe that every minor thing they do provides a secret message about when their next release is coming. It's just leading everyone to get their hopes up and dashed over and over again.

The new record will be ready when it's ready. It's good that there are signs of life, but when they actually start moving towards a release, it will be obvious.

that being said... "pioneer 10's last telemetry" does sound slightly plausible lol. also could mean "boards of canada's last release". /:

Do you, or anyone, know how long before the announcement of TH that mushroom cloud image appeared? I wasn't paying attention at the time. Was it 6 months? A year or two? The thing that's interesting to me is that the pioneer banner change occured on the Hell Interface page - a moniker that they've only used very sparingly. The BOC page is still the same image it has been (though it was reuploaded or file type changed a week ago).

Have we considered that there could be an actual Hell Interface release of some kind happening?

2009 actually. but I think in that case, they posted it way too early. Though it was clear they were working on the whole apocalpyse angle for a while with Newcleardawn.com

Sweet. So we could be 3.5 - 4 years away from a release lol. Remember in 2009 / 2010 MDG was insisting that a release was happening within the year. Clearly they got delayed by outside circumstances (maybe that's when Mike moved to NZ!) So maybe they posted that mushroom cloud with the plan to release around then, but then reconsidered or decided to plan out the ARG and that took a long time to put together.

We all know why it got delayed: They were looking for that one second of audio on Cold Earth for four years

But in all seriousness, i get a vibe it won't be that long this time. I mean, it's already been 8 years haha

I'm with you, it feels like it won't be years. Remember though that they are still beholden to Warp for at least this record. I'm certain that we will 100% know when something is happening because Warp will market the shit out of it. There may be some clues but it won't be deep-web style sleuthing. Warp will want people to know it's coming and get the hype train going.

After this record though, all bets are off especially if they leave Warp and go off-label. Then they can drop stuff whenever they want, which they've alluded to always wanting to do.

It was at least 3 years before the release of Tomorrow's Harvest. There was speculation on Twoism that the next album would have dystopian/apocalyptic themes as far back as 2010.

Exactly. That's another reason that the fixation on vaguely related dates doesn't make sense. The label wants money. They want to drum up excitement for the album and cash in on it.

In 2013, the Record Store Day vinyls had "Boards of Canada" prominently displayed on them, contained a snippet of new music that was obviously BOC, and Warp confirmed it was legitimate within hours.

A marketing campaign is not going to start with a YouTube banner change that sort of hints at a date if you dig through Wikipedia articles long enough.

Honestly, what are the thoughts out there about how the release would actually play out?

I can't imagine it being something like simply snuck inside a Warp newsletter announcing a new album, but is the general consensus something large and elaborate, or do you think it may be a bit more subdued because of the pandemic?

I mean, it feels like we're looking for clues like the TH campaign never fully finished, lol. I wasn't part of this forum for other major releases before TH, so I don't really look back further than that for reference.

Personally I don't think it'll be anything similar to the TH campaign and it would also depend on the type of release. If it's the Old Tunes vs. something new, I could see the options being very different. I could also see the pandemic causing issues with plans that may have been forming for a release - imagine pulling off the TH campaign with the various restrictions around the world? Yikes...

I often ponder if they'd simply put the announcement on the front page of the Warp website like every other release.
For some reason it's hard to imagine that.

Have I simply worked it up so much in my mind that BOC are too legendary to simply receive the same treatment as everyone else? That might the case with other people too.

Perhaps they'll simply put up a link to the new BOC website and all the details will be on there. Much like the 2020 mini site for their stupid giveaway.

The elaborate and cryptic campaign for TH was pretty new, I think. Geogaddi had almost no promotion. It was just suddenly announced and released. The mystery for that one was only in the music. It seems like that was pretty much the same for TCH - although I don't remember as I was not paying attention to BoC in 2005/2006 (I was into American folk but then soon Burial would take all my attention). But I don't see any old articles that mention any kind of mystery around TCH. For TransCanada Highway, they did do a little clue-finding campaign that led to the warprecords.com/666 page and a video - but it was very simple compared to TH.

So you may be correct in that we're all still in the TH clue-finding mode which they may very well decide not to do again. The TH ARG was so stunning that I'm not sure how they top it without looking silly. So they very well may not do similar this time. That said, I imagine the TH campaign was a huge money maker for Warp, so I think they'll be enthusiastic about repeating that, despite the band's intentions.

Your last sentence is on point. It’s in everyone’s best interest that they hype up this album in a similar way to TH. I don’t see the new announcement appearing out of the blue on some random day.

I honestly have no idea what to expect. I think that's why some times I feel y'all are going way overboard with the numerology stuff, and other times I'm hanging on every word. I know it was discussed before, but it wasn't until just right now that I felt a space/future-themed album would be kind of perfect for the theme...

Guess it would fit a narrative of the pioneer plaque (whether a release was timed on specific dates or not).
