Go listen to Lateralus.
I agree with both of you. Tool are overblown, pompous, aloof, self-indulgent etc, but I (still) like them alot. Not as much of a fanboy as I was 15+ years ago mind. I think they suffer from a fanbase of overly-earnest schoolboys mixed liberally with overly-pumped jocks/meatheads.

Then again, thinking about, aren't BOC a little pompous and aloof too? And isn't some of BOC's music a little self-indulgent? And aren't we all fanboys who over-analyse the work they create? I know I am.

Pots and kettles maybe? Then again, I love both bands so I guess that makes me twice as bad.

let me guess- you're now going to disagree with all of this.

win? no?
I'm not going to disagree with all of what you say, and I have no idea where "win" came from. I agree that there's a lot of "HEY MAN, I'M STILL MOSTLY A BRATTY TEENAGER BUT I LISTEN TO TOOL SO THAT MAKES ME SMART AND SHIT" and understand most of what you're saying, although I do disagree with the music being shit or "pseudo-intlelligent" and happen to really enjoy Tool. I am not some pompous teenage brat who makes spice all day, so that breaks that stereotype. You are generalizing Tool listeners very heavily, and your ending comments, especially pertaining to the "Twilight and literature" thing make you look extremely pretentious, in a very hypocritical fashion regarding your original post. Other than all those things being opinions, and what dictates something vague like art or fine literature is totally a point of view, your pompous and cocky attitude greatly hinders any potential meaning, underlying message or style you're possibly trying to perpetuate.

1.9 out of 10 for Kinski, says Pitchfork Media.
one and a half stars out of five for Kinski, says The Guardian
three out of six tacos, says the daily Rodheh

"win? no?"
a) it's a message board. don't expect me to go into extreme details on why i consider tool pretentious. that would involve me going back to their albums and the lateralus boom of the early 00s is still enough of a trauma for me.

b) are you still a teenager? if you are, i'm sorry i yanked your chain.

c) as you said, it's all opinions.

d) incunabula!

∞) anyone knows what sustain pedal would work with yamaha dx7? is there a specific model?

z) i suck at english, sorry.

xoxo

Aight, now you're just trying to be funny, but you're not. :P

I respect your opinions as anyone else's and you don't need to go back far and explain exactly why you dislike Tool. This isn't the thread for that. I just would think that if you stated an opinion, you'd have at least a slight bit of reasoning to back it up pertaining to the actual opinion itself, that's all. If you don't want to go into detail, that's fine. I ask though that you not generalize people because of it.

And no, I'm not a teenager. I didn't listen to Tool back then, it was mostly Daft Punk, NIN and Boards, but I hadn't joined this forum at that point.

Yes = BOC is indulgent.

Songs with titles that are just random numbers and periods, obscure album art for each album except for Hi Scores and Trans Canada Highway, not posting updates for 5 years, not providing any major audio/video interviews for anyone to hear, having a track that's nothing but fucking silence on an album.... The list goes on and on....

But see, the thing is that I don't really consider most of that "pretentious". I think that something that is artistic and creative is only pretentious when it's used by pretentious people. Pretentious people actually ruin those sorts of things for those who want to make a legitimate message out of them.

Richard James does that sort of shit a lot more than BoC does, and is he necessarily "pretentious"? No, not really, because his means behind it is not justified with a pretentious and pompous statement. Bands like Creed and Nickelback are good examples of what being pretentious really is, along with about 90% of "mainstream" rappers today.

Fair points. All I will say is - I didn't say 'pretentious'. But I'm splitting hairs I guess?

Just trying to point out that one person sees as genius, another regards in tedium and it can be a fine line sometimes. I've always felt there are parallel's to be drawn between BOC and Tool but who's to say I'm right? Anyway - more important things are afoot. My tea's ready for one. :D

Yeah, I feel the same way. And no, you aren't splitting hairs, you're just replying in context to people who were splitting hairs before you.

Go enjoy your tea. xD

tool spelled backwards = loot

From the art-point of view boc is the least pretentious band I know. No fuzz, no stories, no ego, ...
From the musical entertainment business point of view boc is pretentious to the bone. They don't give a crap about fans, no gigs, no stories, no updates no autographed nickers on ebay, allthough I think we've got some stickers in the past, and t shirts.

Pretentious is subjective.

Sadly, Tool has been a victim of bad marketing in most cases. Tool's talent and intelligence is wasted on people who can't possibly grasp anything deeper than beer, vagina, tattoos, and bench presses. And because Tool were played EXTENSIVELY on these so called "edgy modern rock/ metal" radio stations here in the states, interspersed with ABSOLUTE GARBAGE, this is what happens. But this is all generalization, and I generally take no part in that. Harf.

Also, hide... n' stuff.

No but seriously, lets speculate about this lack of album a bit more shall we? Anyone ever just straight up email warp and/or bleep directly to ask them what's up? Anyone ever get a response? My apologies to Fredd-E in advance, he probably has a very nice detailed section on the bocpages about that specific question already.
