not trying to rehash this but i was reading a random campfire headphase interview and thought this quote was relevant for this thread.

Michael: “We’re still proud of Geogaddi, but let’s get things straight: it was a record for the fans – guys of whom we knew they would have the patience to listen to it attentively anyway, and who would make it a sport to pick out the obscure winks to politics and Satanism. Campfire is more of a warning directed to the fans: you better watch out, the next record could perhaps differ even more radically from our earlier work. Boards of Canada is a unique project that got a bit out of hand. We wanted to make only one record on which we would pour the dreams of our youth in sounds, but right now we are at album number four already and the end is still not in sight (laugh). I'd certainly hope that people who didn't get much out of the album so far are giving this another listen in proper high quality (and really giving it the time it deserves). I personally really liked the album, even when only low quality recordings were widespread, but I've since listened to the WAV files provided by Bleep on a pair of Beyerdynamic 770s and I must say this is something else entirely. I think it'd be foolish not to sample it the way it was meant to be just because you were underwhelmed by some rather dull sounding rips.

anyone think cold earth sounds like a different version of skyliner? there are a few tracks on here that seem to vary on existing note progressions from previous releases. I've noticed this at least twice on tomorrow's harvest (I'm not going to abbreviate).

come to dust features 4 notes repeating over about 8 bars that has become a trademark for boards of Canada, but I guess I was hoping for some newer sounding material. that being said, I think tomorrow's harvest is a fantastic album. just kind of caught me off guard with how predictable some of the sounds were.

i've finally been able to listen.

the record may not have been a huge step in changing sound although i think they have refined and gone deeper into their sound. i don't consider that regression per say. but i can understand where the original poster and those feel the same are coming from.

these tracks feel so monumental. i heard old tunes for the first time today and tomorrow's harvest for the first time today. the progression is epic. it's like they went from basement beat makers to scoring prestigious films... yet the groove hasn't gone anywhere.

well said. tomorrow's harvest does seem like a film score.

its certainly no summer album thats for sure, granted you could apply 2 maybe 3 tracks to a summer soundtrack. we can feel the desert heat, thats about as close as we can get to the sun here.

i went out yesterday to a friends place, got a little stoned, came back but couldn't hack it with the sun blaring outside, was unsettling tbh. so went back outside.

I did find this to an extent as well, but I think that it was more to do with the fact that I already had a preconceived notion of what they sound like and because of super high expectations. Things seemed to progress intuitively, which hasn't always been the case for BOC. There were less 'wow that's crazy' moments at first, until I re-listened over and over again, and started finding the signature nuances that they always bring-- the things that don't stick out at first.

My impression of it now is that it's meant to both be easy to listen to, and ambiguous in its complexity. As with all their work, its true brilliance is that it doesn't bore me, it makes me come back to see what I missed and always leaves things to be found. They can sound perfectly mechanical and organically chaotic at the same.

I think it is their best work to date and an absolute musical masterpiece. It was both familiar in what I expected and succeeded brilliantly in exceeding these expectations...once again.

The entire album reminded me of Zoetrope, the first song I ever heard by them which so effortlessly toyed with, twisted, and balanced sometimes opposing emotions.

i completely agree with you!

I completely take back what I said, with every release except for campfire (I loved that the first time I heard it lol) I had to listen a couple times to really sink in, this one is no different. After a third listen, it's pretty amazing. Everything about it is really polished and detailed and you can tell they put a lot of time into this record.

It's like the more refined younger brother of Geogaddi to me. But it's dark in a different sorta way. I love it.

It's got the darkness of Geogaddi (maybe even moreso) but less of the...psychedelicism, for lack of a better term. I love that you can compare it to Geogaddi in a shorthand way, but it really is completely its own animal.

Waking up with 'Cold earth' in my head a couple of days in a row now, i'd say it def. has a subliminal effect on me. I'll give it some more spins with the FLAC's now (untill the vinyl arrives) and i'm sure i'll get overwhelmed by it

Let me break that down before I get flamed.


I know we have all come to BoC through different paths, life circumstances and ages. My first foray into the BoC world was during a pretty rough patch in my life and as cheesy as it sounds, the music made sense to me and stirred things inside that I simply struggle to put words to.

Feelings, thoughts, family, memories, mistakes, childhood, emotions......

The older releases are so very much important to me in this respect, MHTRTC, Geogaddi, IABPOITC etc.

Each and every single one has something, something that I cant explain that makes me go "whoa"....goosebumps, hair standing on end etc. You know the score. One of the biggest hitters for me has to be "Kid For Today". It just makes everything seem......right.

I can (and have done lately in the build up to TH) listened to these on repeat and can do so with ease.

To me, that is the beauty of what these gents do, they can create that familiarity with their work that makes it seem personal. Almost gives the sense that they were around with you when these memories that they are stirring were originally seeded in your mind. Its not art, its not math, its not skill......its fucking voodoo.

Along came TCH which was definitely a change, but a beautiful one nonetheless......Dayvan Cowboy captured both me and my wife's hearts on special drive from LA to San Francisco. Special stuff.

So I know that a lot has changed......I am in a much better place, wonderful wife, kids, home, career......and I am fairly sure the guys have had a good deal of change too, hopefully all good.

But these changes, have definitely changed the BoC sound for me in this album......I know many others will disagree but we all have our own take on things........but there was an awful lot hanging on this album for me and it didn't deliver. I do still like some tracks, Reach for the dead is still lush..........but none of them do THAT thing. You know....the one that you don't know what it is, but want more.

I am fairly sure the hype didn't help, not just the warp hype but also my in built hype.

I do so hope it will grow on me but for what its worth, none of the albums ever needed to. Not one bit.

A bit deflated but I have enjoyed the ride I have to say and I am chuffed to have been a part of this community while it was happening. That will be one of the biggest wins out of all this for me

i know exactly what you mean. it may stir up something in younger fans, its like this is too close to 2013 or something. some of tracks take me back, perhaps 2 or 3. a few of the tracks seem very Thriller, 80s, Espionage. they've set the mood, no doubt about it there, yet the other tracks don't fit this 80s horror/ drama whatever. Reach for the Dead, Palace, JC, New Seeds. its a bit of mixed bag in mood and period.

are we getting too old for this?

It could just be that our paths through life are taking us away from situations that make this feel more important than it is.

Perhaps this will be the old albums for the new generation

Either way, I still love BoC and everything about them, especially the people here

And I will include this when listening, it just wont stop me in my tracks when say, I am painting the living room and make me just gaze out the window as some of the old stuff did

i think to a certain extent one needs to give themselves a chance to have experiences with this new music... for example compared with the 3 main albums thus far I've listened to Geogaddi the least and it follows that it doesn't transmit feelings from my past as much as Music for Campfire.

it is definitely not as inherent of a nostalgia invoker - for lack of a better phrase - as the preceding albums. but I don't think think they were trying to do that. *see the quote i posted above. although i think boc's music will always have that power even when they're not trying.



after listening all the way through i think this album as whole... how everything ties together... is really great.

Reach For The Dead->Comes To Dust is incredible. one can hear how palindromic it is by listening all the way through at once.
