I think its a valid question, there's quite some magick going on throughout their work. They combine stuff from a lot of different cultures and different approaches to spirituality, whereas most religions preach that all the other religions are being led astray, is a big concept in satanism. Some of the shorter songs totally sound like spells, almost like audio sigils, and how powerful they impact the listener, is reminiscent of magick. Using math, numerology, the occult the way they like to do surely plays with that. Religious brainwashing is a common theme in their work now too.

Not saying they are definitely psychonaut wizards, but there's plenty of connections in their art to not dismiss at least an interest in this.

I think it’s all fun and games for them and not actually real.

I thought satanism was inherently a joke anyway and the "practicing satanists" are just atheists that are really annoyed by religion and also want to celebrate degeneracy. Those being the main incentives.

If it's a serious doctrine and you seriously think our golden boys would worship a deity I don't see why they'd choose Satan. That's like picking a venomous snake (with no terrarium) as your pet out of all possible animals.

I also looked more carefully at the horribly xerox'd album art of Old Tunes V2, and its a chick laying on a beach getting her tan on. I never even noticed what could be not starfishes but pentagrams there too?

Also, in Geogaddi's signed copy , a good old pentagram from mike:

Could be part of the edgy marketing too, like how they had listening parties at a chapel and church. I think that's where the promo kaleidoscopes were given out

Then there's the Geogaddi being a hexagon, like hexagon sun, except a pentagram fits perfectly in a hexagon and theres two triangles on the shoulders, Mike and Marcus, to deliver the goods.

then again some of their work is homage to the Karesh thing, but they aren't Kareshians as far as I know. though they may dabble in cult like behavior themselves

And their love for old media like Sesame Street and PBS and such, but that doesnt make them part of the cast of Sesame Street or a PBS reporter themselves.

its all so confusing

also - the most curious thing about geogaddi to me isnt the 66.6MB proportions of it when compressed down, or 66:6 length or any of that, though that is, but rather the Japanese Bonus track From One Source All Things Depend, with different sound clips of prayer to God. Tonally throws the wrench in everything for that album,

Lmao this thread reminds me of that one guy that used to published a lot of boards of canada on youtube, and then suddenly stoped because he "realised" their music was satanic and then went on to copypaste on every comment sections a peppe silvia board to explain why the brothers were devil worshipers or smth.

This forum is definitely a strange place to be someone who really cherishes their Protestant upbringing and found a lot of hope and open-minded love for fellow humans in it

But go off I guess

I dont think there's anything wrong with speculation, but yeah I am just trying to provoke discussion.

They certainly have a curiosity towards the aesthetic and thematically, even with lp5 release and (Dante's) inferno and 7 simultaneous listening sessions, one in NYC I think in a church. And while I think they very atheistic or agnostic if anything, because they said there is a religious quality to their lifestyles, in practice they aren't really religious at all. It's just all very on the nose at times.

Would need to find the magazine interview source but found that intriguing. around the same bits where they said they prefer whether they live and easier as artists than an urban setting with a suit's elbow in their face in a tube lol ... iirc.

it opens the door for discussion given their themes, and general mystique around them as people. but yeah, I am on the side of probably not tbh.

Coupled with not giving a crap about the music industry. Well, if they did, they'd fit right in with that crowd.

know what else is also kinda really weird? geogaddi sometimes seems to function as a mirror

I must be hallucinating this (or rather my subconscious is remembering fragments of different posts as one post), but this is the closest post I can find to what I was remembering.

I thought I read a post where someone said they felt that the melodies in BOC's music could function as / were audio sigils intended to produce certain effects in the listener, like magic. Now to be clear I don't believe in this stuff, but I do think there's a strange beauty to it and that it speaks to how a strong melody can have a hypnotic impact on someone who's listening intently.

The other night I got pretty stoned (in other words, don't take me too seriously, but also I was hypersensitive to the music) and listened to BOC Maxima in that state of mind for the first time. And I really vividly felt how each melody on Chinook, Everything You Do Is A Balloon, BOC Maxima, ROYGBIV, and so on, all have such care put into them, such an iconic presence, and such intentional space given to them while being layered in ways that play around with the greater space above the sum of the parts. It was like each melodic phrase was a character with its own presence and message to share. It was really pretty powerful! And it got me all enchanted with this idea of melodies as audio sigils.

Anyway, all this to say something we all already know: wow, BOC has a way with melody.

Completely inaccurate as well. Atheistic Satanism is far from degenerate.

Give me a break. If you want to have some sophisticated anti-religious philosophy there are better ways to do it. I’m sure they have some cute definition for the movement that sounds noble and great. So does everyone. You’ll find the most self-absorbed person will call themselves ”empathetic”.

Satan is a symbol for evil and degeneracy. You can’t just invent new definitions for words. That’s not how the world works. There are (obviously) people who actually want to celebrate degeneracy. They’re going to gravitate towards what universally symbolizes that. It’s just a fundamental design flaw to think you’re being cute forcing it to be some civilized intellectual thing. If you want to have that call it something else

Actually Satan means adversary or accuser.

Atheistic Satanists and theistic Satanists are the total opposites of degenerates. I should know I've studied the phenomena for a longtime.

Your perception is based upon the moral panic and unfounded allegations of ritual child abuse propagated by Christian censors in the early 1990s which still persist in popular imagination.
