Looking back at this thread is bonkers.

So much has happened since points in time nearing seven years ago I said things I'm surprised or slightly confused I said, at the very least in the wording, and much of the dialogue I was taking part in at the time has not aged well either.

It probably won't be too long until gender is not a viable discussion, period.

What did you mean by "gender not being a viable discussion for long"? I didn't get it.

I get that feeling, I used to follow very harmful and regressive points of view in the name of being, to put it lightly, an angsty f#&%, but we've all had plenty of time to grow since then.

I think I get what you mean, it kinda just goes in circles at this point, and a lot of the "in-fighting" that goes on in LGTBQ circles puts an even bigger wedge in the movement, and sometimes an "us or them" type rhetoric. Or maybe I'm completely off on what you actually meant. Due to my past experiences with groupthink I refuse to go to any of those "communities" for guidance.

Honestly, I feel a little bad for bringing this thread up again in the first place.

Ive been suffering from a type of dysphoria and I don't know how to change the world to accept my identity, Ive always felt that Im significantly more mature than my actual years and Ive since come out and identify as an OAP, my family are very accepting of my wishes to become OAP and my family and friends have been very supportive of my journey to become the person inside I have always been but was accidentally (by the fate of predestinational evolution) younger biologically and the problem is my identity isnt recognized by the government and it is causing me to feel anxious, unhappy and I cannot claim my pension now, which is my human right to do so because Im an OAP.

No piss-taking over here; there are different aspects to identity (e.g. racial, age, etc), and it seems like this topic would do well to stay focused on gender identity. Feel free to make your own thread though!

They are! As is society, itself; and all of these things have a lot of different effects on a lot of different people. I think that makes it worth talking about, organizing around. We all respond to these social constructs differently, and they respond to us differently, too.

It's kind of an ouroboros type of discussion, really. Even as I said before, I don't attribute femininity or masculinity as a gender thing, yet it's still a perplexing issue when the greater world is brought into the mix, with different ideas and concepts and such. Where is the line where gender identity turns into some kind of internalized sexism? When is it just a different state of mind? Who do you want to be today? Do you want to be just like someone on TV?

Is "Remy" an acceptable girl's name in English, or would it be "Remi"? Both? Neither? This has been a pressing question for me.

For what it's worth, Wikipedia lists both men and women with the names Remy or Remi. It originally came from the Latin remex, "oarsman," which was a masculine noun. The given name "Rémy" was a boy's name in France for quite some time, but in recent decades that has changed. My intuitions tell me that it could go either way. It's a pretty name, anyhow.

It's funny, most people live with their given name but when someone picks a new one it's only then we really question how personal a name IS. What is "acceptible" in names is all cultural... if someone acts surprised by a name its just down to what they've seen. The more uncommon something is the more people might be surprised by it, and dealing with other people's surprise *can* be tiring. But, like, it doesn't make them *right*, right? Whatever name resonates with a person to go by is cool, obvs.

The funny thing to me is I don't know that I knew anyone called Remy before that character and now I can't think past it, so it screams 'girl' to me It's a nice name! I wonder how many people have the same kind of associations? Wouldn't surprise me if it was becoming a more popular girl's name now.

I suppose I shouldn't let a few comments on behindthename deter me from thinking it's a nice name . I'm not sure where I initially got the association though.
