The Beatles.

Not criticising, I understand their status and popularity but to my ears, apart from the odd tune, they just don't do anything for me. I can't really put my finger on why. It feels like it's a generational thing, but then I like a lot of other popular 60s and 70s music.
There seems to be a generally held view that the 60s and 70s were the peak of popular music, which I don't really get either.

Most Radiohead, Arcade Fire, My Bloody Valentine, I only like a select few metal bands as well.
Oh and prog rock.

Also The Strokes, can't see what the big deal is.

EMINEM - Overrated as fuck! I agree he has lyrical talent (or did anyway). But his actual songwriting skills are horseshit

It makes me sick when people compare him to 2Pac. Tuoac may not have been the most naturally talented rapper, but the songs that he wrote were catchy and memorable. Sure, "Stan" and "Lose Yourself" were both great songs by Eminem, I'll give him that. But he hasn't done anything on that level ever since. So I'm saying the guy sucks and is extremely overrated!

That's what I often hear about people, and I can sympathize with it to an extent. Still, his music literally is just too homogeneous, each track provides the same exact experience and I get tired of it quite soon. Apart from that I also have a distaste for his production style, particularly the vocal cutting and most of the drum production. He's just not for me.

Several other artist - such as The Beatles who I actually somewhat like but just don't understand why they are regarded as one of the greatest bands of all times so universally - mentioned here as well that I would agree with.

You know? Even being a fan of Queen for what? 10 years now? I can relate to that. I think he is overrated as a singer. But I like him as a complete musician and as an integral part of the band -- which is what he always wanted to be in the first place. I remember him on an interview before Rock in Rio, in which he openly dismissed the idea of him being the "leader" of the group. As far as his singing goes, I liked it better in the early 70's, before he got that throaty character in the 80's or so. But he was always a great composer, anyway.

I also genuinely like the Beatles, but I can't stand the messianic, religious figure that they have become. Everybody MUST love the Beatles and must CONSTANTLY show it, as a badge. I'm tired of Beatles covers, of Beatles tributes, of symphonic Beatles, of Beatles string quartets and all that. I dig them alright, but, sheesh, how many other excellent rock bands have there been aside from them? Hundreds? Let's give them some cred too.

And also, George Harrison's All Things Must Pass is much, much better than any Beatles record in my book.

Yeah, Burial's drums are quite strange but these days most of the stuff coming from London sounds a bit like that, those somethingsomething-step influenced beats. To be honest I can't quite figure Hyperdub Records out, I find what they put out interesting but it also sounds a bit off to me (except for Laurel Halo which I found immediately brilliant.) I feel like I might eventually get into Burial, though.

I also don't really get Grimes. It sounds very pretty and I do listen it from time to time, but the Beyoncé-core vocals are horrible and the melodies themselves feel half-baked, as if you could make a good album with these same elements with some more work or a more talented songwriter. I mean, she references lots of stuff but in the end it's all fluff so what is she doing with all those references?

Surely The Beatles, which as a mod fan, I never liked. And most of prog music (e.g., Genesis).

It's not so much the rhythms, I like 2-step stuff generally, and not even the type of drum sounds themselves, but they have certain timbral qualities that just sound very annoying to my ears. There's some kind of multi-band splitting and processing going on there. This particular issue is also not limited to just Burial.

Yup, absolutely. Burial is pretty unique and exciting, though I can see why people wouldn't get it.

Also, very surprised to see MBV mentioned, I would've thought nearly everyone on here would relate to their sound as its principally linked in style and nuance to BoC. We're all different though eh

Modest Mouse. That band fucking sucks. I'm sorry. Vocalist is terrible. I just don't fucking get it. And i love a bunch of different genres and artists, but this band is so overrated it makes me nauseous.

odd future. they are awful. their whole 'shock value' gimmick is annoying and not funny.

also, their tv show is like a bunch of 16 year old kids ripping off tim and eric and failing miserably.

can't get into mumford and sons either.

There's nothing really to "get" about mumford and sons, they're just horrible.

Stevie Wonder. I almost never hear a song of his that I like (though that one george michael cover was good from 23 years ago)

Not a Michael Jackson fan either. I did not like Thriller at all, not when it came out and not now. I liked a few tracks from Off The Wall.

Agree with the Beatles being overrated too. I just realize its contextual and right timing. No one was doing what they were doing when they were doing it. Or at least wasn't doing it as well. But that doesn't detract from the fact that I own nothing from any of the above 3 mentioned.


So yeah The Beatles, Michael Jackson, and especially Stevie Wonder. Mumford & Sons can take their banjo wicker shit back to the UK.. we have enough of that stupid shit here in the states.

I wouldn't say the Beatles are overrated (they are a little bit, but yeah, they are good). I definitely think that their importance is overstated. They had the right combination of talent and ambition: they could write songs, and they wanted to rule the world. Well, at least Paul wanted to. And they did it. But nowadays, all the bands sucking on their dick incessantly just makes me cringe. It's okay, they were great, but they did not invent rock 'n' roll from thin air, you know? They had their influences and inspirations (and plagiarisms) like every other rock 'n' roll musician. If you want to make your tributes to the guys who created all the rock music that there is today, just go all the way back to J. S. Bach, then. Rock on to The Well Tempered Guitar. Call him a god. He was god (didja know? It's in the Bible!).

The Beatles are good and I don't dislike them the way I do Stevie Wonder who gets under my skin in a nails on chalkboard way. But as the BEST OF ALL TIME status. yes overrated.
