It's amazing how good Radio 1 from the late evening until 5-ish in the morning in comparison to the sycophantic shite that it pisses down its listeners' ears throughout the daytime.

I just listened to Ambivalence Avenue today.

WOW!!!

I have never thrown a random CD on my mp3 player before, by an artist I've never heard before or even heard of, and enjoyed it so much. It put a smile on my face all day. Just wonderful.

Then I got home and bought the damn thing! YEAH!

I hear this cd is a bit of a departure from their normal sound though?

the 'funkier' tracks are really not clicking with me, i'm sure in time i'll learn to appreciate them. on a more positive note, 'the palm of your wave' is such a beautiful little song. and on a bibo-fact-note, 'dwrcan' translates to 'water song' in english.

the reviewer seems a bit up his own ass

would be inclined to believe ambivalence avenue is his best work to date based on what I have heard

the best piece of music I have heard in a long time

This is an absolute stunner of an album. It's the kind of LP that packs so much creative punch, it boggles my mind how he could possibly have done it. I thought he must at least have other people doing backup vocals or the occasional guest drummer, etc...but surely enough in the sleeve notes, it's all Stephen. I'm sure he's been working on material this varied all along, but from a removed perspective, it's almost like he had an unparalleled explosion of creative ability...and this record is the result.

It does explain why he took down his Duckular myspace page, though. It seems to me that tracks like Sugarette, Fire Ant and S'Vive were pioneered under that alias, which was later abandoned after the Warp deal went through. Wrapping it all up under the Bibio name results in a pretty dizzying picture, but I prefer it over artists who have a dozen pseudonyms. It's a good thing he gave us a reminder that we were actually listening to Bibio at the end of the record by mixing a bit of "The Clothesline and the Silver Birch" (from Vignetting the Compost) into the last track.

Makes me wonder though...where to go from here? Most albums leave a fairly clear picture as to what might be next, even if it's a massive departure from what came before (as different as TCH was from Geogaddi, it was no quantum leap). With Ambivalence Avenue, I'm left scratching my head. Bibio could literally go off in any number of different directions, with equal probability. I have absolutely no idea what to expect from him next.

The LP art was also very well done. Didn't notice how well the artist got Stephen's likeness down until I saw the full size cover. Also loved the little leaves to indicate the record sides, and the degraded, stained art throughout. It was funny though, standing the record side by side with some of my older collection, which is genuinly stained, tattered and scratched in spots....it made me wonder what this album will look like when it has actual moisture stains on it, and years of wear.

P.S. The Pitchfork review is beyond awful...but at least he realized it was a great record.

And it's been ages when I've listened to an album and liked every song on it.

I've had it facing out the last couple of days. I love the cover almost as much as the music. There's something about the line drawn style that reminds me of British '70s cartoons. Mister Ben I think. The touch of colour in the doorway adds something special too.

I'm going through my first listen of the album, and really my first listen, outside of a few clips online, of any Bibio ever. So far it's fantastic. Don't judge an album by Bleep's preview track is what I say because earlier today the only thing that made me buy this was the glowing reviews in this thread.

What sold me was 3:50 on Fire Ant. I'm not sure what exactly that is being sampled (Speak and Spell-era device, the nerd in me is saddened I don't know), but Man or Astro-man? sampled that very same thing on their excellent album Experiment Zero. That did it for me. More later...

i'm looking forward to more output i might even try and get hold of the previous releases on vinyl...if any where cut, that is

i'm listening to this again, and just like when i first heard Music Has The Right To Children, this sounds so old

in a good way.

"Fi" on vinyl was my first exposure to Bibio. You can nab it on Tower Records for pretty cheap. They should have Hand Cranked as well.

No VTC on vinyl yet, unfortunately. Hopefully soon!
