on first listen reminds me of a combination of all his previous work,including eccojams,and also echoes of plaids soundtrack work as well,enjoyed it a lot,definitely gonna grow on me,i think it reminds me of plaid because of the production,very clean and clinical sounding like a lot of recent warp releases imo

Seems like a really polarizing album based on the reactions i've seen. I love it!

Looking at the bonus tracks on nins hesitation marks and looks like his remix of find my way is on there.

I really like this album. every track seems to contain shorter tracks within them, so the album feels like it has more songs than are listed.

I used to dislike his older music, as I'm not really that fond of ambient music anymore. I must say maximusmischief got me converted. R plus Seven is really amazing.

i'm really feeling the early-internet/shareware cd-rom vibe of this album. the video for problem areas is so windows 95. it's multimedia. i really hope it's all done on vintage hardware samplers.

holy butts "chrome country" is seriously taking me back to the 90s. that fraction of a shakuhachi sample in the beginning was like whiplash to me

this is one of the most unique but wholly retro albums. i dunno how it can occupy both ends of that spectrum at the same time but dang

It's a shame R Plus Seven isn't getting as much love from some people compared to Dan's previous efforts. I think it's pretty admirable that he's heading in a different direction instead of just sticking to his comfort zone. The album really reminds me of something Philip Glass would come up with if he limited himself to producing music with a General MIDI sound module. I think spiritually, the closest contemprary music I can think of is James Ferraro's Far Side Virtual. Both albums cover the same kind of ground of mid-90s cheesy corporate soundtracks (without sounding too similar to each other). Lopatin's work seems to avoid parody of the era though.

Anyway it is imo a fantastic collection of compositions and even better than Tomorrow's Harvest which didn't really cover much new ground musically.

I think that's my problem with it. I hated the sound of General MIDI at the time and still do. OPN has to make something quite avant-garde with that palette of sounds to avoid corporate soundtrack parody. As a result none of the tunes have stuck in my head or caught my ear like Replica did, and the sound itself does nothing for me.

I actually applaud BoC for not feeling the need to progress beyond what works for them. At least I feel something for Tomorrow's Harvest. R Plus Seven is just blank.

The best thing about the new album is the way he totally plays with song structure, suddenly abandoning a groove by taking the last microsecond of it and stretching it out into something that evolves, then peppering it with cut up samples out of nowhere. That kind of deliberate avoidance of tracks that begin, develop and end in a formulaic way (but without being a monolithic slab of disjointed noises) is genuinely interesting.

But the sound palette is right in the middle of this synth-preset world like you say and I dunno. It just doesn't excite me. I mean, intellectually I get the idea of tapping into that corporate, muzak-y wasteland and juxtaposing it with art pretensions. But it sort of reminds me of being in Tokyo Disneyland in the haunted house, and some kids were going "ooh scary" in a mocking way. I mean, congrats. You're not scared by a Disney haunted house. The same way that holding 90s muzak up and saying "look how sterile and artless this is" is kind of shooting fish in a barrel. So if it doesn't work on a sonic level (because the sounds are bland), or an artistic one (because it's fucking obvious), I kind of think that's why it doesn't satisfy.

At least taking abandoned music from the 80s or whatever as a starting point and doing whatever to it, it comes out sonically interesting. Maybe because however dreadful that stuff sounds now people were at least making an effort to make it, so whether it was super serious music or bubblegum pop it reflects some kind of aesthetic, it has something of the time baked into it. You look at the Games EP and you know, you could even say that edged into parody but so what, it worked better. It's telling as well when you start from there, you can get away with taking - what - a fucking Chris DeBurgh sample and just pitching it down and looping it, and come up with something that makes sense as a new thing, you don't have to work so hard to get an end result.

TL;DR I agree about the sound palette thing and I probably don't "get" vaporwave
