Cheers guys. They're with LAMDA, I have to do three monologues, and then hopefully... yeah. Can't afford the fees for drama school so this is probably as far as I go (outside of some amdram maybe) but it's been fun learning.

My group of friends are mostly young actors, trying to get into drama school at some point. I am not my self.

LAMDA is excellent according to all of them.

From what I can tell, the process is very very biased. Judges use personal preference quite a bit. If they really like you, you might get your fees slashed by a certain amount. I believe drama schools have been known to (rarely) foot the entire bill if they want someone.

It definitely isn't what you'd call standardised, but that is probably for the best anyway I guess.

Also, I don't know about LAMDA specifically, but I know that some drama schools expect one Shakespeare monologue. Don't take my word for it, that's just what I remember being told

Nice. I haven't heard the remix/masters on vinyl. What is your opinion? Having been a 90's teen and avid Nirvana fan who grew up on the original mixes/master, I was intrigued, a bit mystified and yet a bit thrown off by the new mixes. Hearing so much more clarity and spatial mastering was neat but almost a turn off at points for me. I found myself being partial to the original mixes/masters I had heard for 20 years. In saying that, I do however, like the new mixes as well. But this is all based off digital. I'm assuming that the vinyl might find the balance I was originally looking for between the old and new mixes. Still haven't heard it on vinyl though. So just wondering what your take was on it.

I have the Albini original CD mixes for the sake of comparison, but I honestly prefer the spaciousness of this mix. It is still claustrophobic and rough, but the instrument separation makes for a more satisfying listening experience. This is just me stabbing in the dark but I imagine any commitment to original mixes is probably an emotional attachment or just familiarity, personally I think these new mixes are very cool and bring the album back to life, the drums are especially good. It is really hard to tell what is the correct sound the band wanted as Kurt was mentally checking out at this point, and after Nevermind probably just wanted to lay it down truthfully in the live room. Most of this album is live recordings, I think, so the openness of the mix lends itself really well.

You also have to be careful with digital and vinyl comparison as around 90% of vinyl pressed since the late seventies has gone through a digital mastering process of some sort, very little is actually pure analogue. But these mixes and the In Utero box set (which is potentially the best mix) were mastered from the half inch tapes (I think that is the right size) so they are more vibrant and engaging. There is something definitely quite similar sonically to the mono presses of the Beatles albums which were released last year, it just sounds more immediate and clear. Between all the versions of this vinyl I have heard, the original 1993 pressing, the 2013 mix and the box set are the best, but are all different in their own ways. I am definitely glad I got hold of this version though, most people seem to agree it's definitely up there amongst the best. In any case, what a fucking great album.

Very cool. You are not stabbing in the dark when you say that any commitment to original mixes is probably an emotional attachment or just familiarity. It is definitely that. And I haven't sat with the new mixes long enough to really absorb them yet. I myself am a fan of spatial design and mastering so it really is my familiarity to the old mixes at this point that is holding me back a bit. I know time will bring me into a new and great appreciation for the new mixes. On the other note.... I'm not sure how Kurt himself would feel about these new mixes being so clear as he was a fan of claustrophobic, mono, and lo-fi mixes, and from what I studied and read, he was really trying to get back to that type of mix for In Utero. Of course we will never know the true answer to how he felt about the new mixes. But I almost feel, and this is me projecting, that he would secretly like them but pass it off as too polished.

No problem dude, I love talking mixes and pressings etc.. I am bit of a Hi-Fi/Vinyl nerd/over-enthusiast these days! Which is probably why I like the new mix so much, as from an 'audiophile' perspective it ticks all the right boxes in terms of clarity, minimal distortion and separation etc.. Steve Rooke mastered this release and he is generally favourable for mixes so I'd definitely give it a go if you can get hold of a copy

I reckon you're right about Kurt as well, his taste was pretty eclectic and he most likely would've mellowed over time, but like you say, we shall, unfortunately, never know.
