I'm not raging mad about the leak, just kind of bummed that someone was able to go to the listening party which i was unable to go to, and wasn't prepared to respect the conditions of being there.
after all, it's just a broadcast of the recorded material, there is no ad libs, or nuance of a live performance, as there would be with some rare jazz bootlegs, i.e. we will hear the exact same thing when it is released, which we know it will be. no material will be 'lost' that could have been archived.
also given that this is part of the promo itself, there is a lot to be said for being discreet having been given this exclusive opportunity to hear the album ~2 weeks prior to its official release

i think it was more about the event, the location and boc fans coming together than it was about the music specifically. time for that when it drops at my doorstep

oh definitely, but you can't record that

Blah blah blah, people here need to give it a rest. You're not going to impress the band by being a white knight and ranting about how terrible the guy who bootlegged the playback is. If they're even aware of it, they almost certainly don't give a shit. There's no meaningful violation of trust or any nonsense like that. It was a promotional event by a for-profit company, not a BoC-hosted jamboree in rural Scotland with peyote and a big campfire. Get the fuck over it.

As someone who was there, I was disappointed that the guy posted the whole thing. I don't think he's scum of the earth, and I guess I'm not too surprised that someone tried to bootleg it for internet points.
But it was completely about the location, meeting other fans, and feeling like you got to hear the album early. People keep saying, on this thread and the other one, "oh get over yourselves, it's just an album and Warp/BoC are shitheads for making people go to the middle of nowhere, and only idiots went, etc etc"
Look, I know it was just hearing an album in the desert. But I'm a huge fan of Boards of Canada! I went because I didn't know what was happening, it seemed like a fun excuse for a reasonably accessible adventure (I mean, a 2.5 hour drive isn't ridiculously far away), and then I got to be a part of something special. And it was a really great way to hear the album for the first time!
Someone called it "white knighting," but it's not. No one thinks BoC are going to thank them personally. It's just that most of the people there got that it was something special, and wanted to keep it that way. It was about being there, and if you turn it into a way to bootleg the album, then you're missing the point of having gone. But whatever, the video is down and it's in the past.

I'm glad to see there is still some respect in the world for those who appreciated BoC's and Warps request, warp records are no big fish they are still an independent which is great, they are all very humble as some of you who met one of their reps have commented on, and support some great acts other than BoC, perhaps you should try another forum? I'd hazard a guest you have just jumped on the bandwagon and thought you,d be cool, you thought wrong..

With a band like BoC, there's both value in what you hear and don't hear.
Regardless, I really don't think the recordings against the band's wishes are that big of a deal. Yeah, he shouldn't have done it and I'm not gonna listen to it (I haven't even listened to Gemini or White Cyclosa except for a few seconds), but I don't think it's anything to get angry about. The band never officially released (most of) Old Tunes and we've all listened to that.

And that was something only given to friends and family too. Now there's an actual violation of trust; distributing something meant to be enjoyed by only a few select people.

Exactly. We're all guilty. The only difference is that it's easy to white knight here because we'll be able to hear it legitimately (at a much higher quality) in less than 2 weeks.
Let he who has never listened to BoC bootlegs be the one to cast the first stone.

It wasn't that long ago in the grand scheme of things when (as I'm sure a lot of us can remember) if one of your favourite bands was putting out a new album you had to wait weeks at a time for news about it from magazines that would cost a few quid. If you wanted to hear any music before the album came out, you'd have to hope you were lucky enough to be listening to the right radio station at the right time, or if the band you were into wasn't big enough to get radio play your only choice was to buy a single that would set you back a fair few quid as well.
In this day and age (and believe me I am the complete antithesis of people who hark back to pointless nostalgia when it comes to progresss and technology - I very much live in the here and now) we have the technology for millions of people around the globe to be able to hear a song on the same day and time and it's become the norm for many bands to just give us several songs from an album before its release. No one even commented on the fact that we are all just able to listen to Reach For The Dead on demand, at our leisure, without handing over a single penny. It's become so ingrained in us these days that we don't even take a step back anymore and realise how priviledged we are as serious music fans these days.
This is not a 'remember the good old days' type post - it's a reminder of how much things have changed in the last 20 years, we have three new Boards Of Canada songs we can listen to as and when we please with a new album in less than two weeks and still people complain that we should be free to leak the entire thing wherever and whenever we please as if that's just the way of things - those of us who can remember when that wasn't the way of things realise how good we've got it.

I'm someone that realizes piracy is a reality of the world we live in. Yep, I love the Old Tunes material a lot. I will be the first person in line for a boxset of the old material, I want to give them monetary compensation for the happiness they've brought me, whether it's $20 for a 2 CD set, or $100 for something massive. Is it currently a violation of trust? Maybe - but that bridge has already been crossed and I'm not personally responsible for the forbidden fruit being available.
I feel that they have at least made peace with us having access to that material (PC being worked into the Invocation video, links to various fan videos on Youtube, etc)
My biggest issue is, if the fanbase does something that goes against their wishes, we might not get opportunities like this again in the future. Hopefully it just takes one look at this "fan"'s Facebook (and the fact that his girlfriend walked out of the listening party midway) to know that we are dealing with opportunistic scenesters and not people that were there for the right reasons.
I'm not expecting Mike and Marcus (or even mdg) to come out of the woodwork and personally thank me for publically condemning a leaker, its just that it is my personal hope that they see a backlash to this behavior from their dedicated fans.
So I guess it is white knighting after all, in a roundabout way - more of a "please look at most of us do the right thing, so that you'll take more chances on us in the future".

So we can't have individual morals? I'm not trying to impress the band, but just follow my own morals. And that being said I think most people here wouldn't have a problem if this was all after the album came out. Although I don't really see anyone watching a windy sounding playback of an album they could listen to on hi fi after the album comes out so….

What's with calling boc 'the brothers' all the time. I find it a little creepy.
I mean, I know they are brothers and all.... But still, that's not how they represent themselves. Especially to us, the faceless fans.

I would like to point out that they reached out to us on behalf of Aesthetics and Mark David Garret by posting a clue for us to find. I think it is safe to say they understand the difference between the kind of fans who sit back and talk about how much we like this song or that song on a forum and might share that song with a friend and people trying to benefit financially or otherwise from their body of work by not paying for it or ripping it to sell on a street corner. We have almost a thousand fans on this board a few days ago. How many of those accounts or going to be active in six months? In the end, people will do what they will do. It isn't up to you to judge them. I bought all of their albums and I pirated what I could not legally buy. You should to. Thankfully, many of us grew up sometime over the last decade and we realize the difference. Nothing will change. The band will still continue to be awesome. They just might not post about it on Twitter or Facebook next time. Just my two cents.
