Oh hell yes. I imagine that if that was off of any of their early releases, it would have been Play by Numbers. That song rocks.rainier wrote:I listen to r35 a lot. I never see good old 7a get any love. That's a cool song. I would love to hear more of their purely guitar based stuff.

definitely agree with you, there's so much talk of the early releases as being these fabled legendary lost works but in all likelihood some if not most of them are present on this tape, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they had heavily sampled hooper bay, catalog 3 et al for twoism, boc maxima, perhaps even geogaddi, to the point where it would all be fairly familiar even if we did hear it.Opothecary wrote:I'd still be willing to bet large amounts of cash that R35TT is mostly a collage of stuff from those old releases. I have a feeling if and when the boxset happens, people are going to recognize songs and be like "oh, THAT's such and such".
From all I've read, listened to and studied, this ^ is pretty much the same conclusion that I've come to. Very well said. Concerning the original topic... 11B is classic of course. The entire R35 blows me away every time. I can never get over 4A. I love it. I always laugh so hard. It's like a hillbilly kung-fu fight on crack. I have a feeling if and when the boxset happens, people are going to recognize songs and be like "oh, THAT's such and such". Someone at least as of a few years ago had copies of SOMETHING from that era that still sounded good enough to make that tape happen. Hell, I've gone as far as putting 4 out of the 5 covers in a square (sans Catalog 3) and using it as the cover for R35TT in my collection.
R35TT is definitely my favorite of the 3, despite the numerous highlights on the other 2 tapes - it does make me almost feel that Old Tunes is the odds and sods of those early releases.
Maxima/Twoism is when they wanted to get signed, and the two "official" Old Tunes were both compiled in that same time frame, so it makes sense that those tapes would leak out too. I'd say in the actual timeline up to and including Hooper Bay, it was family and close friends all the way. Anyone who received those releases were close enough to the group to understand the value of not just tossing them in the garbage or selling them.
I think R35TT was a nice attempt by someone in the inner circle to get the highlights of those releases out to the public, and by not providing song titles and chopping some songs off at odd times, obfuscating the whole thing and still keeping those releases a mystery.
One interesting sidenote is that back in the MHTRTC era, Catalog 3 and Closes Vol 1 were not listed in the discography, just the other 3. Those 2 when they were added later also had a note saying they'd been reissued to CD in either 1997 or 1998, I can't remember now. That info might be in the wiki but I'm just recalling it from memory right now.
still...it seems odd that the three tracks we HAVE heard, "Duffy", "Circle", and "Wouldn't You Like to Be Free?" are still nowhere to be found. why didn't those ones find their way onto the tape but we have samples? Hmm...
the diversity of the songs on this tape astounds me. I would never otherwise believe that the same band behind a song as cheerful as 14B would also write the haunting 6A or the techno of 11B but, damn, there it is. Maybe these songs are remnants from when there was more creative input than just the two brothers? Either way, it's a mind-blowing collection of tunes.

That is exactly why I love this tape - it's so eclectic! And I'm sure that comes from it being compiled from the different phases of their early career. If the compiler of the tape was being careful, as they seemed to be by including slightly incomplete versions of some songs...I could see them avoiding those songs that had known samples available for the same reason.wash wrote:still...it seems odd that the three tracks we HAVE heard, "Duffy", "Circle", and "Wouldn't You Like to Be Free?" are still nowhere to be found. why didn't those ones find their way onto the tape but we have samples? The shoegaz-y live band material that's present on this tape seems very consistent with the sound/songwriting style of "Wouldn't You Like to Be Free?" To me, even in a live band setting, they have their fingerprints all over the music even if the instrumentation is different.
I think since the Old Tunes were compiled at the same time as their first modern releases, the music that's there mostly ties into the sound they were going for at the time.
i think it was on the same music70 page that the other two samples were on. i agree, it's an amazing song. it's the closest thing to mbv by another band i have ever heard, too - it wouldn't sound out of place as a Lovelvess b-side.rainier wrote:What are the origins of Wouldn't You Like to be Free? Who leaked that and when? I love it.
Also, it has what is one of my favorite boc fanmade videos ever: i could watch those visuals that start at :25 forever

Yeah I think they really "get" mbv's sound, you can hear it even in their more electronic music. Imagine an alternate reality where they'd remained in a more traditional rock arrangement. I dunno if they're over it by now, but I've always secretly wanted them to drop a rock album.
I think I hear a lot of guitars/pedals on their new stuff and it sounds very cool to my ears. I come from more of a rock music background, although they were my gateway drug to electronic music pretty much.

I think that was around the time I dropped off the grid for awhile. I remember coming back to civilization and being like "wonder if there's a new boc album". In a weird way I think that made the long wait for a new album not so painful, because it was like one of those "if a tree falls in the woods..." koans for me.

If I were to actually recommend an album for any new fan to listen to first, it would be Maxima. As an album, it links the old material to the new material. If you like anything on that album, you will find other BoC songs you like.rainier wrote:Old tunes are old favorites for most big fans, no? Not so much this one but the other two tapes and maxima have always seemed like fan favorites to me.

Listen to House of Abin'adab and then the excerpt from Circle. They were cannibalizing themselves before anyone was even paying attention.Keeoaddi wrote: definitely agree with you, there's so much talk of the early releases as being these fabled legendary lost works but in all likelihood some if not most of them are present on this tape, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if they had heavily sampled hooper bay, catalog 3 et al for twoism, boc maxima, perhaps even geogaddi, to the point where it would all be fairly familiar even if we did hear it.
