I downloaded the rip of the album but I'm not really listening to them...gonna wait for the album to arrive on Tuesday.

I've thought about downloading the stream rip (I've already bought the vinyl), but would it be a lower quality for listening than CD?

I don't know much about that sort of thing.

The stream was likely a much lower quality to keep bandwidth down, probably no better than 160 kbps. (I'm guessing it was 128 kbps.) A CD/vinyl release after being ripped will likely be at least 256 kbps, more likely 320 kbps. So, the quality will be twice as good.

iTunes uses 256 kbps AAC, which is a smaller file size than MP3 while retaining the same quality, so it's essentially equivalent to 320 kbps MP3.

The rips that are floating around are 320, but given some of the other things I've noticed about them, leads me to believe it's not an actual album rip, but rather someone recorded the stream and then upscaled the entire thing.

The stream rip was noticeably lower quality than the Japanese Itunes version I have.

Streams are rarely high quality due to both bandwidth concerns and the fact that it's a marketing tool: you're not going to broadcast a stream as high quality as the album, where's the incentive?

Just can't believe how shortsighted Warp is...

I do understand that big labels are stupid. But that one week long
release schedule just doesn't make sense. There is no rational explanation for that.

Same day worldwide release. That's what I want...

The original stream source was VBR encoded, starting from approx 220 kbps all the way up to 300kbps @ 48khz.

I really don't get why they haven't released the digital tracks after they streamed the album. I really appreciate what they did, the waiting has been unbearable, but they must have known a leak was bound to happen by doing this.

Instead t'internet is now being infested with half decent stream rips in 70-90% quality from Monday night. Could easily been prevented by releasing the digital tracks for sale or at least downloading for pre-orders.

Not at this point. Now the Japanese release is everywhere, which means the rips that you can easily get now are finally the real deal.

Again, a release on iTunes likely could have curbed a lot of this.

See Daft Punk. That's pure viral marketing bliss in a couple of ways:

1) the Facebook event about the stream which everyone shared = major publicity

2) by having a stream in good quality you give people a legal way to listen to the album in advance before ordering; else they would rely on an illegal download and perhaps not buy the album anymore afterwards

3) people like to do as little effort as possible with the max gain; such a stream was really easy for everyone to get a good idea about the album... instant lazy win in publicity
