5.9.78 Appreciation Post

Knowing this song makes me wonder what else there is in the world that can make feel the same way. I doubt there's much, but if anything, I wonder who accomplished it.

There are a select few boc tracks that I love but have trouble listening to, because they just evoke so much emotion, that sometime I feel like I cant handle it. 5.9.78, Everything you do is a Balloon, You Could Feel the Sky, to name a few.

Completely agree with these songs. I'd add Olson, Audiotrack 13A and IABPOITC to the list. These songs capture some sort of very sad emotion, whilst being extremely beautiful at the same time. At least that's what they do for me.

Whenever I hear it now, it evokes such little memories of my being a kid and running around discovering shit for the first time. That sense of wonderment and curious amazement. All because of this video.

I love it when sound and visual just melt together in that naturally harmonious way. This is a grand example of such harmony.

It was mentioned before in this thread but I also do miss the version that had the extra terrestrials picture, from youtube. it seems to not exist anymore. the first time I heard the song was watching that and seriously I think i received information through sound waves haha. If I was in a forest and a giant spacecraft landed and these extra terrestrials appeared, I would simply put on my headphones put this song on and go willingly.

Bumping this thread because the transition from Boqurant to 5.9.78 is one of the greatest things they've ever done. This track might just capture the feeling that we tend to associate with BoC's music better than any other. I only reserve it for special moments, but when I do choose to listen, the way it manages to move me is simply indescribable.

I've heard a lot of people say they don't play their favorite music too often, in order to not wear it out. I often wonder if they are telling the truth, as I don't have that sort of restraint.

I actually have a big problem with that habit. I have a tendency to fall into it and I think it only has a detrimental effect on my enjoyment of music, because whenever I decide to label an album as one of my favorites I instinctively avoid listening to it in order to not wear it out. The problem is that most music that's good enough to be one of my favorites is good because its genius is further revealed with each listen, rather than degraded, so avoiding the album kills its appeal more than "wearing it out" does.

In short, if an album can be worn out then it wasn't really that good in the first place, which is why it's a bad idea to overvalue a musical work. I think the reason why I love the Old Tunes so much is because their unpolished nature and their length haven't put any pressure on me to play them in moderation, which has allowed them to grow on me more than they would have if they were official releases.

All that said, I've never really understood the acclaim that this track has among the Old Tunes. I personally prefer King of Carnival, She Is P, and Finity when it comes to Volume 1. For some reason 5/9/78 just feels stale in comparison to most of the other tracks, maybe because of how much emphasis is put on the droning synth chords, when much of the allure of BoC is created when that kind of stuff is kept in the background instead. The simple chords of King of Carnival would have been much less magical if they had been the loudest element in the mix.

The synth being at the front of the mix is what I love so much about this track. Just the way it fills my ears; sounds so thick, so full of life. Took me a while to fully appreciate this one, and I still think the percussion could do with being a tad bit more imaginative, but all of the synths together are just so entrancing that I never want it to end.

The thing is that the whole synth soundscape is something that's been done many, many times and it had already been done many times when this track came out. It isn't inherently unoriginal, but this track in particular just isn't doing a whole lot new. It sounds a bit too much like Selected Ambient Works Volume 2, but not quite with the same mystical dreaminess of tracks like the Curtains one or the emotional intimacy of the Z-Twig track. BoC don't really feel like they were doing their own thing here as much as they were in my favorites of the Old Tunes.

great bump, there will never be enough appreciation for this track. Just superlative. Easily in my top 5 boc tracks, without hesitation.

Good week to revisit it about 1,000 times, too. Warm fuzzy vibes are in demand.
