Aphex Twin?

I was actually discussing AFX with a mate last night over some beers, have to appreciate how original the guy is and the complexity of his music and the lengths he goes to to experiment with unique and completely original sounds. He's been referred to as the Mozart of Techo lol, but you know, I tend to agree in a way. Now he does have some horrible shit, but that's either shit he's into himself or he very well could be doing it to wind up his fans, he's known for that.

But if you take all all his good tunes man, (and there's no shortage, he has some catalogue) and disregard the drill/blender/god-knows-what shite, he's an unbelievable artist. I definitely prefer his more chill shit, but i'm, a big fan of many of his 'heavier' tunes.

Also do you guys reckon he's The Tuss, I reckon it has to be him, but I haven't done too much looking into it, BoC took over ha

Does anybody have the video of the UK fan street encounter somewhere? The one where Richard ends up taking pictures of his fan instead of the other way around. It was so brilliant. Like, "why the hell u takin pictures of me ur famous im not" "so I'll remember you". It used to be on Youtube but it got removed.

But in all srsnessisms,

overall AFX ain't as hot as people say, he's did a lot of things first and has some really good tracks, but RDJ and SAW1 are really only his all the way through good albums, and neither of those are really perfect.

Squarepusher is my #1 for "IDM" acts.

Shit man, I know the one. My mate is a massive AFX head if I'm chatting to him later i'll get him to send me it.

He also said something like "you can add me on myspace, but it won't be me"

Actually, just seen you wrote it got removed? Wonder why? I seen it couple months back.

Yeah the Myspace thing was there too, that's the one.

Maybe it was reuploaded with a different title or there's a duplicate or something, I caught it off watmm and the link there has been dead for at least a year already. I couldn't find it again anywhere.

That video sounds like fun. I remember way back that Wikipedia linked to a topic (don't remember where) in which Richard ("disguised" as a girl) first started talking about the Analord discs. And when one guy got really pissed off, teaching everyone that "digital and analogue sound exactly the same, because they're both electric" (that's what the guy said, don't hit me), Richard wrote a huge post about his experiences with both. He humiliated the guy forever, without making any direct insults. That was epic.

I've never had the nerve to listen thoroughly to his entire output, but I'm a fan of a lot of his stuff. I'd say he's more of a real pioneer than a genius. Autechre, those are geniuses. And Squarepusher is God. Or something.

no problem buddy. I text him there, he's at work, I'm sure he'll be able to find it, hopefully anyway. He may even have it on his HD as he has everything AFX related ha. Just listening to this track now actually, one of the albums I always tend to overlook

also love the interview in Russia (I think it was Russia), only other one on youtube besides the MTV one, I'd bet he was tripping at that, he looked mad uncomfortable ha.

I'd love to hear a new album from him, but I'm fairly certain he's The Tuss anyway, I mean there's a lot of proof and the sound itself is a giveaway. It may have already been proven, I haven't been reading up on RDJ much lately, he used to be my favourite electronic musician, he's what got me interested in trying to produce music. But as I said, one day BoC just clicked with me and it's been an absolute addiction since then. And I love it! But Richie is still the man!

EDIT: Sorry to post another tune, but just had to, i love this track. Just coz he makes a lot of rubbish weird shit people kinda dismiss him I think, you have to dig through his discography and you'll find no shortage of absolute gems. Not that the one I posted just now is obscure or anything, but I keep finding new ones that I love, and plenty that I hate. I really think he puts out rubbish stuff on purpose, for a reaction, or just his weird mind games.

Fuck yea Squarepusher. He's diverse like Aphex Twin, but he goes into other genres I enjoy and play gigs for, like jazz, all the way to hard Drum n Bass. He's topped only by Boards of Canada for me, whom are IMO the best "IDM" act out there. I don't like using the term "IDM" though, kinda sounds pretentious to say you listen to intelligent dance music.

i don't know for sure, dunno if anyone does, but it seems extremely likely that its him, i'd put money on it.

I used to love squarepusher, but his new album was fairly crap in my opinion, nowhere near as innovative as his older work. And i really hate the new visuals and helmet shit, just looks tacky to me. Really like fly lo and gonjasufi is cool too and bibios older stuff. They got a lot of aritsts on there now that i really, really dislike. And oneohtrix point never are unreal. Actually caught Fly Lo and Them in London last year when Bloc was cancelled (still gutted), but Fly lo and some other rtists stuck around and found clubs to play at. Was a great night. And big respect to those that did stick round, most fucked off home, but who can blame em, when the whole festival fell apart on the first night.

me and my girlfriend were gonna see flylo a month or 2 ago but the tics sold out

i think warp has some great headliners but some crappier people as well
squarepusher i like for the drill n' bass parts, i like his later work more than earlier

well for me, Squarepusher had 3 brilliant records, and 3 great ones.

AFX had 2 great ones, and the rest are pretty good to meh.

BoC have two brilliant and two great

Autechre have had only one or two great ones, with the rest kinda blurring into some homogeneous stew.

So for me, even though I agree that Ufabulum and Shobaleader were both pretty shit, he has the better track record compared to his contemporaries.
It seems all the big names Warp was known for are now being overtaken by the new school, FlyLo, Battles, Mount Kimbie, Africa HiTech, Bibio, etc etc.

Thing with Aphex is he dicks about, to greater and lesser success... Around I Care he did some great stuff, but some of it is deliberately taking the piss out of the super-seriousness of electronic music at that time. He gets away with it, because it's still good music, it's just got this whimsical quality to it.

Windowlicker, Come to Daddy both pisstake tracks, but they work. I'm pretty sure some of his RDJ era stuff was pretty much cynical "lets make things more fucked up and extreme and see if people still buy it, lol". (Him and Paradinas actually). But then, he found some kind of value in that sound and refined it, elsewhere breakcore happened, and by the time he came out with Drukqs he seemed to be taking it a bit more seriously.

Tuss and Analord seem to be back to being back on form.

I've been browsing the edit history for his Wiki article for a couple of hours and couldn't find this. I'm especially interested in his thoughts on digital, so do you think these posts still exist on the Internet?

Aphex is The Don but he's also a prankster with a wicked sense of humour. Which is probably the reason why I like him more than Sandison & Sandison.

I don't think so. The Wikipedia reference was removed somewhere around 2007, and they pointed originally to the Planet Mu forums. The link is dead, but I found it on the Wayback Machine: http://web.archive.org/web/200710042244 ... 2&t=165057. It's an immense thread, but search for "analord" and there'll be no mistake.
