TAL's Juno 60 emulation is uncannily close to a real one. I've actually copied a couple of the best presets that come with it and programmed them on my real Juno.

This thread's got me going to their website to check their stuff out. The Bassline 101 is the SH101 clone, and on the product page for it they've got an MP3 demo of A/B'ing the hardware against their VST and it's equally close.

I mean, I'd rather have the hardware, but short of having £500 for one, it's a bloody good second choice.

I like the TAL-Bassline too but, since I don't have a good knowledge on synthesis, I can't make some good patches with it ;--;

i hear you...i don't like vsts. BUT...i have a juno 106, i spent 400 replacing two voice chips a few years back, every 6th note would not play. now...the right output is not werking, the volume knob crackles....and the freakin voice chips are dying again. probably the remaining original two. its an awesome synth....but its falling apart fast.
with this vst sounding as it does...and knowing it'll werk when you turn it on [load it up]....its kinda making my juno106 look like it may be saying bye bye.
id miss the line noise though. i kinda like it.

See, I've sort of resigned myself to the fact that if I ever do shell out for some hardware it's going to have to be something in that kind of condition that needs some repair. (Used to work in an electronics factory so I know some theory, though my soldering is pretty terrible, and my dodgy Bassstation still sits unfixed in my loft). It'd be good if I could get good enough at fixing stuff that I'd have some skills the next time someone sells a junked CS80 on eBay.

Oh man. I really feel for ya. Those voice chips really are the achilles heel of the 106. I'm fortunate to have a 60, which has slightly more reliable voices.

Looks like I'm buying a mate's Jupiter 6 very soon, which has what we think is a failing voice chip. We have a spare but I'm kinda nervous taking it in for repair. Could work out expensive.

You're jetting a Jupe 6? *gets in car, heads in your direction*. I've been lusting after one of those for years. Pipped at the post for a couple found on eBay some years back, always regretted not staying the distance.

the problem is getting the parts. for my juno...I had to send it to a shop in LA, and it took them three months to do it.
the older these pieces get, the harder they get to maintain.

i also have a juno alpha 1....the touch strip buttons are shot, the lcd screen is barely visible, the left (mono ) output is shot. sure most fixable....the soft touch buttons though...no idea how that'll get fixed. pitch bend...shot.

my toughest piece is the sh101

I just got the TAL 101 and the D16 Lush to compare. The d16 has far more features but I feel the tal is a bit simpler and closer to the original. My sh101 and juno 60 are in storage at the moment so this is a nice get.

some VST's are quite good though I like hardware better in general it is nice to have instant recall on effects especially, I appreciate recall on envelopes etc. Anyway Omnisphere is still one of the best VST's I've ever purchased for interesting sounds and the synth engine isn't any slouch either though I find sylenth better sounding for straight synthesis. Fm8 is quite nice too.. but I like having a dx7 a bit better.

I'll give you shout when I get it back from repair. I've not played with my mate's one for probably 20 years. Hope it's as good as I remember!

I've dabbled with vst synths, but to be honest, despite getting results I'm happy enough with, they juat don't excite me as much. They don't inject me with unbridled inspiration like my hardware synths do.

That could be down to the fact that I was using hardware for making music as a youngster before vsts existed, and the excitement and joy I felt then is recaptured when I'm using hardware even today.

That said I'm totally not snobby when it comes to vsts. Some of my favourite music artists use them.


Speaking of synths, I ordered a mod kit for my Korg Polysix (gorgeous synth from 1981).

While waiting for it, I made the decision that I'm going to completely restore it, adding hardwood walnut ends/ chassis, and a complete respray of the front panel.

man I love the polysix it has a lovely sizzle to its brass sounds. I'd love to get one. Yeah vst's are not that inspiring but can be really useful at times. The sounds on Omnisphere are really quite fantastic though especially some of the weird stuff like omnichords, orchestrons, etc. a few times I've bounced those to tape and then re-recorded them into ableton. I'm looking forward to recording them to the S1100 and seeing how that may change up the sound.

oh for sure! hardware just feels better...and is inspiring. gets the vibe going.
but the vsts are cool for quickly knocking out an idea you can later take back and refine in the real.
...but coming from me...really doesnt mean much. no idea how to make tunes. none
