To be fair, you can imitate a certain proportion of BoC's sound using any synth, hardware or VST. It's a fun exercise but there's not much to be gained by slavish imitation.

A friend of mie who restores vintage synths uses the odd VST, so they can't be all bad!

haha yeah whatever man as bad as the guy who told me I was silly to have a 5U modular mono synth but useful info for the OP I'm sure. There a lot of people exclusively ITB that sound great. Saturday Index comes to mind, robag wruhme and Loscil.

You can, and typically it sounds like ass.

And I'm not one of these "I only use analog monosynths" people. In fact, I don't use a lot of synths at all. I use samplers. BoC generally uses samplers. If someone wants to imitate them, it's pretty simple. Get some flute samples, load them into a sampler and after you've arranged your melody process the shit out of it.

VST, like any tool, is dependant on what you do with it. Take a top notch VST synth like UHE diva, drop it to tape -- nobody knows the difference.

I think the point is, BoCs sound has 9/10 of fuck all to do with the sound sources they use, but the treatment of the sounds. If you had a VST that emulated the analog synths they use (and stuff like LuSH101 is pretty spot on) it would sound nothing like BoC.

I make shit on the computer then sample it thru an old desk the fire it out from the sampler to some fx or tape or shoe etc...then resample...hmmmmmm nice

You don't have to buy a synth, Jared. I'm pretty sure pretty much every single DAW that's up to date on the planet earth has some form of rudimentary sampler.

I primarily use synths and samplers, honestly because it's
a. Fun to create purely a original sound and
b. I'd feel a bit lazy tweaking some parameters on a VST and calling it a day.
I do use VST's sometimes, and they aren't bad in any objective sense; I just have other ways of making sounds, and it's more enjoyable to be hands on for me. Das about it.
When talking about making BoC sounds in a VST, I don't get the appeal. Yeah, I went through a "I WANT TO BE BoC" phase in my music, and looking back it was so stupid, hardly any of the tunes were inspired by me, they were just pitch bent sine waves. I mean, I've made BoCish tunes before, but if your main focus in your music is to sound like Boards, that honestly isn't cool. Originality and experimenting are key to making music; that's what BoC did to find their signature sound and as musicians I think that's what we should all do.
Ok, rant over.

TL;DR VST's aren't bad I just have other ways of making music, though all my stuff does get eventually thrown into a DAW.

I agree. It doesn't matter how you get there, as long as your sound is great. I'm sure there are some great artists that use VSTs as well as bad artists who don't and vice versa.
