One of my top 3 favourite bands of all time.

Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, and Signals. Three of the greatest albums ever. They rock, and they have that synthy undercurrent and AMAZING production.

Agreed on the first 2 but I think Alex is really sub par on Signals, his playing sounds like mud or something. If he sounded like he does on this rare out take called Tough Break Signals would sound much better; basically it's the band with their Keyboard tech on vocals in the studio doing over dubs for Exit Stage Left;

He's often spoken about feeling frustrated on their mid-80s albums when the guitar kinda got pushed into the background for a bit in favour of the synth but, if you ask me what I consider to be the greatest guitar solo of all time, I'd go with The Analogue Kid from Signals. I almost fainted when they played it when I went to see them a couple of years ago.

I'd be suprised if they did many more tours tbh, Geddy's voice is really struggling these days.

Yeah, that solo on Analog Kid is shit hot! I had a friend who could shred on guitar and he always stated that Alex never "let it rip" on his solos, like he was holding back all the time. I see Alex as the very very wild card in the band; he's the court jester of the whole thing, the one who doesn't take it too seriously. And I think his families background, they're from the former Yugoslavia, really comes through in his playing, at times coming close to what sounds like a middle eastern phrasing/style. The band have stated this is the last major tour for them, I've read NP has a 5yr old daughter he was struggling with telling her Dad would be gone for some months at a time during the tour...

The Analog Kid solo is killer! That album has bunch of great solos though. I love Alex's playing on Signals. It might have my favorite guitar tone of any Rush album. It's odd to me that the band wasn't happy with the production of that album because I think it's the perfection of the sound they were developing.

So we're talking about Rush, and I'm going to make my "controversial" comment here: Clockwork Angels is their best album ever

I mean, when I look at their "golden" era (circa Hemispheres - Moving Pictures et al), their records are good, but they function more as a collection of great tracks (with a slight misfire or two) than as albums. Clockwork Angels, on the other hand, works as a definitive statement. Every song works, and they all go well with each other, forming an excellent flow - from the heavy opening o Caravan / BU2B, through the more atmospheric songs like the title track and Headlong Flight, all the way to the closing The Garden. I think this is the album Rush were truly building up to, from their slight lag in Counterparts/Test for Echo, through the heartbreaking almost-comeback of Vapor Trails and the reconstruction of Snakes and Arrows. They've reshaped their sound and they sound as confident as ever. I love this album.

Side A of Moving Pictures is entirely perfect, though.

Ah, I think your right on the Clockwork Angels comment. If it's their last it's a great way to go out! I think side 2 of MP is not too shabby either!

Dadrock? I got into Rush when I was 13.

I would not be the drummer I am today if it wasn't for Neil Peart. (Not that I'm anywhere near as gobsmacking as NP, mind!)

I've tried for years to get into them because I have friends who are huge fans. I can listen to them and appreciate the musicianship, but other than "Tom Sawyer" and "Working Man", I can't really rock out to Rush. I always find myself wishing I was listening to Soundgarden or even The Mars Volta instead.

Rush ain't really a rock out group (with some exceptions, e.g. The Analog Kid, Animate, Far Cry), that's not what makes them good. They don't play as if they had something to prove. They know they're good, and I guess that's what disappoints/frustrates some people. When they try too hard to rock (e.g. Counterparts), they kinda lose their charm. I prefer my Rush dorky and proud of it.

Agreed, dorky Rush is best Rush Everything Pre-Signals is golden, with Hemispheres being their Magnum Opus to me.

Never a fan of Rush (just haven't heard much) but like everyone else has already said, Peart is one of the greatest (in the technical sense) drummers with any sort of real legacy and I'd probably watch them live were they performing at a festival or something even unfamiliar with their work just to see him play.

OH MAN....my buddy and i used to play Rush stuff in high school.
my friend was and ACE on the guitar. he could play all the stuff Alex played [pretty much] i was doing my best on the bass....but wasn't quite good enough. still super fun though!

SO many awesome tracks....Rush were so good! love everything pretty much from Caress of Steel to Hemispheres.

the reemergence of this thread got me listening to Rush today....that lead to Genesis....Yes...
i miss the days of the long ass songs....and songs that told stories, or albums. vocals or no vocals. [im not really into vox] but those three bands albums took you on a journey.
