Talk Talk's Laughing Stock and The Spirit of Eden are both masterpieces. They should be heard regardless of BoC commonalities.

More detail, less value and focus in my honest opinion. They are not as nuanced, nor do they have that uncanny ability to hide a sample in plain sight. And that isn't even going into the fact that they lack melodic sensibility to my ears, their music obviously has a lot of effort put into it but it just sounds all over the place, like sound vomit. I'd say from the perspective of their approach to music, they are really completely different to each other. BOC's tracks show a consistent compositional restraint and concentration that I don't see in Autechre at all.

I know there are quite a few Autechre fans on here and I don't want anyone to take this post as a sort of affront to their love of those guys. I just don't enjoy their music, and I've observed that these are the likely reasons why.

If anyone thinks they can show me otherwise, please by all means suggest an album of theirs that you think shows off the qualities I look for in music I'd be grateful.

On the topic of music, I always found Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished by Animal Collective to be incredibly similar to BoC in terms of themes and vibe. However, STGSTV has a much more straightforward melancholy atmosphere to it than anything BoC has done, imo. They're DEFINITELY not musically similar though.

The only other band that I can think of that comes close to BoC is The Books, specifically their first album (and my avatar!) Thought For Food. Again, incredibly different genre-speaking, but there's an element of playfulness and exploration that parallels BoC.

Have you listened to LP5 or EP7? Both of those have some gorgeous melodies. Maphive 6.1, Corc, Rae, and Pir are notable examples. LCC and Surripere are also masterpieces. I can see how most of their stuff wouldn't appeal to you if you want melodic stuff, but they have some very emotional and sincere moments.

And I disagree with your statement that ae lack subtlety. They actually have much more subtlety than BoC in my opinion. Perlence losid 2 and bladelores are good examples of this. Those tracks have the majority of the sonic manipulation within the ambience in the background, and it takes very attentive listening to hear most of it. Even Bine and Parhelic Triangle (especially toward the end) do this.
