As for what you've got here, in my mind the closest BoC relative would probably be In The Annexe, which it doesn't actually sound that much like. I think you're doing fine.

That whole album is by far the funniest BoC ripoff I have ever heard. It's like he just heard MHTRTC for the first time and thought "I could do that!".

There are only a limited amount of chord progression, and even less chord progressions that sound absolutely amazing. You wouldn't believe how many musical pieces are written on the same chords. Take the circle of fifths as an example, a holy progression, tons and tons of songs based on it. Its what you do with the progression that's important. Don't be afraid to steal progressions if you have a new and fresh idea of what to do with them, or like it especially and want to toy around with it. Nobody owns them, even though plenty of people pretend they do. Music belongs to God if anyone. Why not go a step further and say you shouldn't be using the same scales as everyone else, or same 12 keys on the piano for that matter? It will never end. Just play the damn music, sonny, and make it sound tasty.

Quarter tones are very awesome. Same rules apply, there are still a finite number of powerfull progressions.

Besides its difficult to do catchy, memorable stuff with quarter tones as they complicate things exponentially, which is the reason I personally don't use them often (besides not having the instruments to quarter-jam with). I feel they are not so well suited for sing-a-long-songs for example.

I'd really like to compose music using Indian notes and progressions, but it doesn't seem possible on the Eurocentric music software (and hardware) we have, unless anyone has a really unfathomable amount of time and dedication to patch it into Max.

You can get microtonality out of a lot of cheapish keyboards these days. My trusty esq-1 that I nabbed off ebay for $250 can do some simply astounding things. Had an old casio something or other that could do it as well
