It's really not as bad as you're making it out to be.


Here's what I'll say to you, coming from someone who has been studying genre after genre and release after release in the music world.

With things as involved and technologically available/fast-and-easy as they are now, everyone is trying to have a voice.
You can tell.

Among this cluttered sea of soundalikes and stylebiters are the people I would consider pioneers.

Without a doubt, most of them are on WARP Records...
Aphex Twin. Autechre. Squarepusher. Flying Lotus.
Of course, Boards of Canada themselves.

Yes, I can symphathize with you feeling that BoC are being rather secretive about their ways...but honestly, all I want to hear out of them is simply more music. (especially an actual official release of their old tapes and early works)

There are some cases where I've seen artists tease a bit of production information here and there...but honestly, if Boards of Canada were to make something even remotely close to a tutorial, or give detailed instructions on the crafting of a track...yes, it would be monumental, and even rather beautiful---but I feel it would only serve (as others here have said) to create more soundalikes. "Tycho" is one of them, no doubt about that...he has a track called "Sunrise Projector", no doubt a direct reference to Sunshine Recorder. However, I still occasionally enjoy his work.
(amusingly, I've heard productions that have taken things further, and tried to sound like Tycho!!! A copy of a copy! Imagine that.)

This is the best advice I can give, O music-making traveller of this waking world...

The fact remains, that to find your own voice,
there comes a point where referencing your influences no longer serves you.

You have to go within and let it rise up from out of you.


It may seem a bit scary at first, like learning to swim or ride a bike.

But you will grow out of such fear, and you will be far better for having gone through such an inner dive.

I had a pretty strange dream a few days ago where BOC released a blue CD with odd looking hand scribbled musician tips and tricks about tape and special harmonies, it was kinda cool. Was probably thanks to this thread! haha
