Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
You guys are funny.
Music is a language of the soul, its fine to imitate the accent of somebody else but you also don't want to go overboard and be offensive and called a racist.
If this analogy is to blurry for you, theres not much I can do.

Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
That may be so, but sound design certainly isn't as important as composition. There's a reason why music tends to be composed for the same standard instruments and why most composers don't specify what sonic qualities the instruments need to have for their specific composition. Mike and Marcus seem to enjoy flaws in performance but not in sound design or mixing, while I'm the opposite. I like it when musicians care only about the music itself rather than the timbre of their instruments.Skimming Stone wrote:I don't think they're trying to make everything perfect, I get the feeling that they just enjoy being excessively anal about the sounds they create. They've said in interviews that they're not fans of 'perfect' music, but I suppose it depends on what your definition of perfect is.drillkicker wrote:That's a good point, 747. I think they're putting too much time and effort into getting everything perfect instead of just making a good song and leaving it. When you start getting excessively anal about the music it starts to lose its magic. I want imperfect BoC back so I can enjoy some atmospheric lo-fi flaws.
Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
Why not care about both? The whole package, instead of one part or another. How do you get the musical sound your looking for when your instrument isn't at your desired timbre? And how do you make good music if you play a terrible melody on an instrument with perfect timbre? It's a balancing act, and BoC have both ends of it down, it seems. Brilliant music, brilliant process.drillkicker wrote:That may be so, but sound design certainly isn't as important as composition. I have no idea what you thought I was getting at, Drillkicker, but I think you definitely misunderstood my post. They try to get things perfectly imperfect, in a perfectly imperfect way, if that makes sense to you. They get things just the way they heard in their heads and work hard to make sure that that is the case whether the sound is clear or muddy. Sometimes the sound is a result of a feeling or idea that they are trying to convey. Whatever they feel reaches that goal best, they go for it. They make their process hard, because that's what they enjoy doing, like you said. It wouldn't be as much fun to them if they didn't. And they've said that too.
Besides, I love that BoC is the one band that I CAN get "excessively anal" about because it actually gains magic, instead of losing it. How is it that learning about BoC's hard work makes their music lose magic for you?

Some people care about specific things. I'm more of a texture guy myself. Drillkicker just needs harmonizing sine-waves. It's important not to neglect other fields, but preference is preference.747Music wrote:Why not care about both?

I'll just say this : I generally prefer their earliest recordings over their later ones, and I think there's probably a reason for that.
Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
A fine point. I've just been doing my best to go after all angles more recently. But ya, it's just preference and opinion. Some of drillkicker's wording seemed like he was trying to state a fact. I definitely can understand it as an opinion or preference though.Cupz wrote:Some people care about specific things. I'm more of a texture guy myself. Drillkicker just needs harmonizing sine-waves. They're early recordings are fantastic, ya. I don't think I prefer old over new or new over old. I like it all too much to make up my mind. Although, now that I think about it, my top 3 favorite BoC songs with a gun to my head are from Geogaddi or before. They're Dawn Chorus, An Eagle In Your Mind, and Track A06 on the Random 35 track tape. Those old tapes do have something very special about them. More raw, in a way.drillkicker wrote:I'll just say this : I generally prefer their earliest recordings over their later ones, and I think there's probably a reason for that.
I can't wait to hear what you make in the Fake Old Tunes contest.
Cheers.

Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
You definitely have good taste in BoC. I have a theory that A06 is actually an early version of Dawn Chorus. They have very similar drum rhythms, tempo, and sampling styles.747Music wrote:Track A06
Thanks. It's already made, actually, unless I decide to do one from scratch. But I have a perfectly good track that I sort of tossed because it sounded too much like BoC, so I think I'll use that.747Music wrote:I can't wait to hear what you make in the Fake Old Tunes contest.

Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
Ya, I think you've mentioned that here before. It's an interesting theory. Personally, I do feel that it's connected in a way, just not as closely connected as being an early version. Perhaps it's an early rough format or remembered template, so to speak, to what they later used to make Dawn Chorus?drillkicker wrote:You definitely have good taste in BoC. Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
I have a song mostly done, but I'm gonna add and change some stuff to it to make it fit a Hooper Bay like fake instead of just a random old tune. I made another post in that thread. Perhaps you could help me along with my question there? I'm up for suggestions if you got 'em.drillkicker wrote:Thanks. It's already made, actually, unless I decide to do one from scratch. id love to hear something.
Masons right...
All I know is Mike & Marcus must be sitting back laughing and patting themselves on the back over the degree of silly lore and complexity we are falsely adding to their sound. Make no mistake their sound is laborious to create but it's also a simple workflow that they repeat over and over. As for presets ? yes they use presets. Turquoise Hexagon Sun Is a preset track. They also totally near completely reversed engineered My Bloody Valentines workflow. Why ? My guess is that working on the backs of geniuses allows you to focus your mental and creative strengths into forging news sounds and ideas. It allows you to make definitive decisions with confidence without reinventing the wheel.
Mason has posted a few times here and I feel like we always shit on him everytime he does, yes perhaps some of that is inevitable when your selling stuff. However at least he's experimenting right ? Shouldn't we encourage that spirit of creation more here ? One tutorial he did that really helped me out was this tutorial on simulating the Grundig TK5, really thought out always useful and I feel that efforts like this enrich our uber music nerd community.

i simply wanna hear it? that would be cool.
BUT i think you kinda gotta back it up when you make a that kinda comment.
that youtube link REALLY doesn't support that claim. its noisy and flat. doesn't hold an candle to actual BoC.
quick simple solutions are quite noticeable. BUT we all dont have the time or balls to drop everything to dedicate time to the music. having bills to pay really gets in the way....and in my case lack of talent.

Agreed, that is way to much of all that. Not all tape sounds like warbly pieces of shit. Less is more.Kyla wrote:

I totally agree. Contrary to popular belief, most reel to reel tapes/decks sound really good unless there's something wrong with it.Cupz wrote:Agreed, that is way to much of all that. Not all tape sounds like warbly pieces of shit. Less is more.Kyla wrote:

Re: Instant Boards of Canada in Ableton
Why use digital technology to try and emulate analog technology when there's so much more it can do ? If you want bad tape sounds, just get a bad tape recorder. Obviously it won't be very difficult to acquire.

I know a guy who wants to fix his tape recorder because of how much pitch shitness it has, even though he realizes how much BoC fans would do to get their hands on it.
