i think that the "new" rips, probably sourced from some 128kbps m4a's from 2011, that is mentioned in this thread

No chance you'll hear these unless they decide to release them properly, which I still highly doubt they will.
The people that have the OG tapes all have BoC's confidence, there will be none in the wild.
I always kinda thought that the fabled "boxset" might just be a repackaging of all the albums in a moneymaking exclusive way.
The fact that MHTRTC has had a repress that might not be the case unless it's still way off timewise.

If they ever did release Old Tunes/R35TT stuff commercially I can't imagine what a ballache it'd be to get all the many samples cleared legally. It would probably be a very truncated version if they ever did put it out.

This is probably a fake... you can hear a lot of digital noise reduction artifacts on many tracks, especially sac, 5 9 78. Shit, I had my hopes up for this.

Not sure you know what "fake" means. It's not a fake. It's a remaster/EQ-ing of the original tape leaks that brtc did in 2014. What you mean is it's not what it was purported to be by the original poster, that is a new high quality source. Which we already know.

Zephyr Method wrote:A friend of mine has found an LEGIT HQ copy of old tunes - comparing Rodox Video, this version has higher frequencies and more audio data. Higher frequencies can be achieved with EQ but more audio data cannot. This is legit. I will be uploading it to youtube soon.
Careful there. You become who you hang with.

Well, I was the guy who found the "hq" copy of OTv1, I didn't realise that it was a remaster made by a twoism user, man, brtc played me very good.

Also remember that the original meaning of "remaster" means going back to the original master tapes and making a new digital copy directly from them, ie not from a tape copy that was later dubbed.
The original leaks were something like this chain:
Master Tape -> Tape copy dubbed by BoC and given to friends -> Someone's cassette deck (of unknown quality and unknown noise reduction settings) -> Early 90's sound card of unknown quality -> MP3 at ?? bitrate -> Internet.
A remaster would be:
Master Tape -> High bitrate WAV digital copy directly from this (done by a professional studio)
ie much less steps, as quality is lost at each step.
The 2014 "remaster" is nothing like that, it just adds extra steps to the first chain above, making it even further from the original.
Master Tape -> Tape copy dubbed by BoC and given to friends -> Someone's cassette deck (of unknown quality and unknown noise reduction settings) -> Early 90's sound card of unknown quality -> MP3 at ?? bitrate -> Internet -> Equalisation in software (maybe some other plugins used) -> MP3 (transcoded)
Just something I think of when I read the 2004 version version being called a "remaster", it's more like a clean up done in software.

Agree, I can't listen to that version, it's just adding noise to me. You're not getting any extra information or quality, just the noise of the equipment the person "remastering" is adding. They're fine as they were but all power to the person doing it if that's what they want to hear.
The one we had before was going to be the closest to what it would have sounded like on the OG cassette, even if it was ripped at a low rate. Cassettes are not the most hifi of formats.

Exactly, good clarifications. The artificially reconstructed higher frequency audio information in the "remaster" is probably from some "enhancement" plugin, which essentially tries to derive the high end from the existing audio with some algorithm. Could be even manual work, at least partially. Then in addition some EQ, stereo image widening and really aggressive noise reduction.
I agree, it sounds harsh and noisy and I much prefer the untouched rip, but I can understand why it might sound better for some people.
