I was also gifted with bipolar disorder. Been on medication (Lithium 1000mg) for over a year now and it's actually going pretty great. Just got out of a manic episode, now in a mild depression (but functional). I can understand you don't see it as a superpower, but I encourage you to always see yourself as a superman, you're struggle is unique and can be very difficult but you are still here! Alive and kicking! Give yourself some credit.

The reason i replied, the last 3 years been one hell of a ride. I wrote all my memories and thoughts down, and put it together. Because I'm a film director I ofcourse knew what to do with them. I wrote a concept and admitted it, 2 months later I got the good news! I got the money to further develop the film.

The movie is about a man 'Mr. Manic', who is the personification of the bipolar disorder. He has influence on a young father trying to find his way in how to be a good father, how to keep a job with severe moodswings and what his purpose is in life and what his vocation is. It will be 40 minute psychological drama with a lot of elements about philosophy, existentialism, stigma etc.

We decided to go for a BoC visual/audio approach because of this thought I recently wrote down:

''And one more mission, create nostalgia. For something that the viewer has not experienced themself (Anemoia). By telling the story so freely with clear elements from the past, I still try to develop that feeling. That means that you would get homesick for present time, and develop an urge to feel more and thus live more. And more importantly, nostalgia is felt for 'the golden old days' and if I manage to make that time for people the present time. That would be everything that I want.''

I hope everything falls into place, and if anyone's interested I'll share updates on the film.

I really appreciate that response man, it’s good to have company in the chaos. I had my first episode back in 2018 and didn’t know what was going on. I lost a few months of my life, was drinking heavily while bartending and learning I was allergic to most mood stabilizers and antidepressants. Zoloft sent me into a psychosis while I was closing the bar down one night in one majorly frightening episode. I lost 2 jobs, my wife almost left me, and I’ve never been the same since.
What’s interesting is I grew up in a speaking in tongues hyper evangelical family. No one would get help for my mom when she was younger and everyone just though she had demons in her. So while I was having my major “transformation” my family abandoned me essentially, literally telling me I had lost my blessing with god. Needless to say it was the worst experience of my life, and I still haven’t recovered from it.
Boards was one of my only constants I could take comfort in. Geogaddi specifically started to hit harder and harder, as I was teetering between my past spirituality and the raw experience of reality. At times this disorder can be a gift (a good manic episode can lead to some brilliant creativity and productivity), but it’s left me trying to rebuild my sense of self.

I could honestly say they probably saved me from commuting suicide more than once, and if they are reading this thank you so much boys, your impact on my life has been monumental. Better than any therapist, pill, or other treatment I’ve come across.

It's nice to hear the positive effect BOC have. When people describe them as 'dark' or 'weird' it always puzzles me because I get such positive vibes from them. I hear a lot of true emotion from them and see a lot of beauty in their wonderful synths and drum loops As great as Aphex, Plaid and Autechre are, I don't have a psychological bond with them the way I have with BOC.

Yeah I'm kissing their ass but they've done me a lot of good with their art and I hope that continues in the future.

Ya no contest when it comes to electronic musicians eliciting emotion. I love Aphex but most of his stuff sans ambient works vol. 2 to me just sounds like Dennis the Menace became a producer. Love it, but it doesn’t capture the grandeur of the human experience like the brothers. Their work is like a great book, a real space you can enter and explore.

I do appreciate everyone who has commented and wasn’t scared off by this topic. Kudos to you and thanks for giving me a space to feel comfortable talking about some heavy stuff. Feeling bad can feel good I suppose.

I have severe OCD that I'm medicated for, but I don't know if or how my experience with mental illness has influenced my experience of BOC's music.

I guess it would be worth noting that before I was medicated, TCH was sometimes able to slow down the torrent of my intrusive thoughts and obsessions/compulsions. It granted moments of clarity when nothing else really could.

I always treat Aphex as the IDM group for extroverts and BOC as the IDM group for introverts. It is probably why the rave scene and mainstream electronic fans find it easier to warm up to Aphex than BOC.

Mental illness is a result of oversocialisation. Mental illness is a form of powerlessness and a result of a psychological war that we've inadvertently done to ourselves. For some reason most are so accustomed to exert to portray moral good that in order to do a necessary harm to society one can only achieve this by acting as a saviour toward moral good, but the truth is that no one can tell the difference. The ignorant masses are a dangerous bunch yet they don't see it at all. That's what makes them perfect and that is what makes them fodder, or a more polite term, sacrifice.

Boards are the kings of consistency. Their discography has an overall standard of quality that is unrivalled across all genres, and they are definitely more consistent when it comes to eliciting emotion, but man, when Aphex gets it right, I think he's capable of delivering emotional intensity at a far higher level.

But that's just my opinion.
