Congratulations on getting those tapes. Only this week I was contemplating contacting Mike about buying bocmaxima from him, as I vaguely know him and live near him too. When I saw ‘thank you Mike!’ And those cassettes on Reddit I knew someone got there first and was like ah damn it! But you clearly are the guy who deserves them after all that work to get them. It must be quite an exciting thing to behold and have. Part of the legend!

Really looking forward to hearing whitewater in all its glory!

My favorite BoC album getting a re-release. Yay.

I don’t think we’re getting a rip. OP posted on Reddit that Music70 came at previous leakers with a pitchfork, basically, and that he doesn’t want to suffer the same fate.

Marcus told me he'd prefer the tape leaks to be available in higher quality so their music is represented more accurately. The tapes should be professionally digitized and shared asap. BoC would appreciate it.

I hope that isn't true. Not that I care about new copies, It's the mentality of music70. The music is out there already

The better the quality rips would've been, the more chance the label would jump on then IMO. If an official release is being planned at all... No point doing that if we already have the rips in great quality.

The guy who bought the tapes has probably had a tap on the shoulder, I kinda thought it might happen soon as the little snippets came out. Don't blame him at all! It's a shame, best thing to do in these situations is stay keep it on the DL until you can get them onto rareboc but Oh well

Plus side though, IF it's that, it's another sign someone cares about the idea of a future official release to go talking to people. That's a plus.

OP deleted all the Reddit posts related to the tapes. He first talked about getting the tapes digitized, then talked about a listening party, and now everything is gone. I'm not blaming him or anything, this is a tough spot to be in. I do hope a better RIP finds its way to Rareboc some day.

I wonder if someone from Warp shut him down. That would be a good sign wouldn't it?

hope mike is not in any legal trouble selling these tapes?

that said, jesus christ give us a little something something yaknow? Now it just feels like warp is hogging material for the sake of hogging it. Is some CEO keeping shit locked up in some dark vault for no reason again?

I doubt Warp would be involved in keeping the tapes from us. They would likely be happy with Boards releasing anything that their fans would buy

1999 interview

What Warp record had the biggest influence on you?

"Polygon Window (Aphex Twin) - Surfing On Sine Waves. I first heard it at a bonfire in the hills - friends used to make us tapes before we knew what it was. We were Warp pirates - we probably did them out a lot of money before we started making money for them."

People going on about ripping the tapes in high quality, seriously, i listened today on youtube and it sounds fine to me.

When the whole ethos of the band is to destroy their music and make it sound damaged and degraded i find it ironic that people on reddit are hounding the guy for ripping better quality.

I’m not sure that “make it sound damaged and degraded” is a fair assessment. Detuned synths and tape saturation is obviously their thing, but the end product has always been pretty clean, no? It’s like photographing old abandoned buildings. Inherent beauty in the decay, but the medium itself only benefits from being higher quality.

Interviewer: "Previously, you told us that you have a huge archive of unreleased tracks and that you often listen to them yourselves. Is this album a collection of various eras drawn from that huge archive?

Mike: "No, all the tracks on the new album were created between 2004 and 2005. Someday, I think we'll make a record compiling unreleased tracks, but only if we have the time to revisit all of them."

With you on this one. One of the reasons Boc Maxima is my favorite album is probably because it sounds so rugged and cassettey. The other reason of course being that all my favorite tracks are on it.
