You are correct. I absolutely appreciate the improvement in sound quality but for me, The emotion, Nostalgia and Melancholic feel of the old tunes far surpasses my desire for sound quality, At least, The tiny fraction of improvements we get every so often.

I feel like these tunes are so well embedded in my heart and my mind, The nuanced resonance of an obscure hi-hat has become completely irrelevant to me!

However these do sound great but as usual, It's only a select few.

These sound so good I wonder if they could have added more recent layering in some places? There are parts where the synths have a richness reminiscent of Tomorrow’s Harvest (I’m guessing possibly Yamaha CS-60 or CS-80) which they wouldn’t have had access to in the 90’s. They could have done the same with added reverb processing. Maybe I’m mistaken and it’s just a really high fidelity version of the originals. Either way I’m loving listening to these.

i asked the original poster in the reddit post's comments about why these are only a select few tracks, and they replied:

the brothers hand chose select tracks from (assumingly) whatever master or DAT from the Old Tunes albums to put on this short compilation which was then privately distributed

i personally highly believe this - the attached wav files in the video description appear incredibly clean just like a digital master. they also seem all identical to the tracks on the old tape rips including all the track fade overlapping. it does genuinely seem like the brothers took clips from the old AFOT masters and likely burnt them onto a cd for this anonymous person. we know from interviews that BOC have been considering compiling releases of old tracks even in the early 2000s, so who knows what year this compilation was made and given to this person.

just from briefly looking through the reddit post history of the original poster, they do definitely appear to be a collector reaching out to friends of artists and offering prices for super unique cassettes and whatnot. my theory is that this person struck absolute gold with a certain contact and managed to either buy this burnt cd from them, or convinced them to rip the audio from it. i wish more details about this compilation were given (was it actually a cd? whats the official name of it? any photos? year? etc) but i assume the cagey vagueness from the OP is all in hopes of protecting the anonymous source, since i would certainly expect only a few copies of this compilation to exist.

to those who seem so doubtful of this being a real compilation: arent there a bunch of limited BOC releases that have never once shown up anywhere online? like all the oldest albums that even got limited represses in 1997? we still haven't ever seen any physical copies of the mysterious "random 35 track tape" show up anywhere either. we've always known about a bunch of super limited BOC material without any physical sightings of them aside from boc maxima and the old tunes tapes. with how long the brothers have been considering making old tunes, it seems quite believable for tracks to still be given to friends of the brothers. don't forget Peter Iain Campbell randomly posting a cd-quality live BOC track on his instagram story a while back - that already gave huge indication BOC are still giving old tracks to their friends. if OP and others continue reaching out and contacting people, who knows what else could be discovered......

I'm referring to gatekeeping information more than music itself. Why not tell us some background? Well that's so they feel they hold some power. But I know from personal experience these things really arent very mysterious or complex as they are made out to be.

It's amazing to be able to hear 5.9.78 in outstanding quality like this. Now that I can hear all the high ends, I noticed the drums sound almost the same as the ones from Oirectine at the 1:14 mark. To me, it sounds like the 5.9.78 drum track was clipped from Oirectine, or maybe they both share the same source. Did anyone else notice that or is it just me?

No i think you're right. Probably just trying to get as much use out of their own drum recordings as possible! Kind of like how the drums in Spectrum/Twoism are shared with a bunch of other tracks.

is there some connection or significance between @babylulu posting this Youtube link and being the last person to push forward an update from the band indirectly but as officially as possible by soliciting a response from BoC knighted lad mdg about any future new releases or a BoCset:

Babyloulou had the brothers curiosity, but in light of unearthing previously exclusively beautifully captured 160k soulseek songs run through the crummiest commercial baked in encoder offered at the time and from the end of a RadioShack rat-chewed aux out cable of a time period accurate budget Coby boombox, and superseding them with the elusive Some Old Tunes (Is 'some' better than 'a few' <magnifying glass intensifies>)

not sure how many more times i can explain this before people realize— the reason i am “not telling background” on the origins of this release is to protect the identity of the person who would like to remain anonymous. what power would i feel in withholding information i would never be willing to divulge to anyone, ever? how is this complicated?

Are you the OP on Reddit claiming the brothers hand selected these tracks to be disseminated, or did you just come across the upload first to post them here?

I understand you’re not willing to say anything that could be revealing about your source, but I do find it weird that you were the liaison for a message from MDG and now this. All would be clearer if MDG posted either of these things themselves, but instead we have you as a middle-man. You say you don’t know how to answer besides happenstance— why do you think this person went to you rather than uploading it themselves, even anonymously?
