This is a good example of why adding 'likes' etc to posts on Twoism is perhaps not the greatest idea, on reflection.

For all it's faults, Twoism does still encourage reading and replying relatively thoughtfully. Reducing messages to popularity contests isn't personally what I'd want to see here. I can get my ego fix elsewhere.

As an ancient "Something Awful/Facepunch" forum user. I can say from history with these types of features, adding ratings to posts is a really, really bad idea. Yes, it would make it similar to reddit. Also, a cult of personality would soon form just like those places. I prefer the ancient rule of forums in that if you have nothing to input, don't post! Just nod along with the post if you agree, no need to give it a gold star. People aren't stupid.

A lot to unpack here. You're implying that a lack of response implies "nodding along and agreeing"? Not only is that doubtful it's borderline presumptuous. I wouldn't presume this is what happened with my reactionless posts. As for people not being stupid, as a general statement that's hard to get behind. Not really my experience. On Twoism I'd hope they're doing better... but not something I'd blindly trust.

What does cult of personality mean anyway? Someone becoming a populist, saying what people want to hear in order to get likes? If "people aren't stupid", that should be good. Someone's encouraged to become a distillation of what's good.

You frequented forums called "Something Awful" and "Facepunch". What if those particular forums were favored by people wanting "something awful" and to be "facepunched"? I'm not sure if I'm interpreting you correctly but they added such a system and it backfired? You think Twoism is exactly the same and the same repercussions would ensue because of egoic people seeking validation?

Some context, the two forums I mentioned were originally the creators of the whole idea of allowing peope to vote under posts. Something Awful came first, then Facepunch (The developer behind Garrysmod) copied Something Awful and did post ratings as well. Instead of just, like, agree... like. There were about 30 reactions you could give to a post. If somebody was chatting complete waffle, you could react on the post accordingly (there was a box for "dumb posts"). It was originally designed to stop people from posting "I agree" to a post/thread and build more constructive replies.

However, all that ended up happening was that the main and most popular users of the forum would often just get flooded with reactions even if their post well, was bad! That's what I'm talking about with cult of personality. It leads to people specifically posting stuff just to farm these reactions. Also, the reactions were weaponised as well as a form of "censorship and circle jerking". I wouldn't like the same here in Twoism because I feel its a bit more constructive, but by opening the door to such things you allow this behaviour to begin in the first place. Not saying that anyone currently on Twoism is like this, but you have to think about the future.

Basically all I am saying is, keep it the same. We don't need to put gold stars on posts. Let people freely think! You wouldn't believe how the ratings effected peoples understanding.

You're implying that either some of the current members would degenerate to the point of becoming reaction farmers or new lousy members would be attracted that wouldn't have come here otherwise

The reaction system worked fine on WATMM for years. It continues to work fine on Keyosc. Unless you disagree? This phenomenon you describe should've occurred there by now and I'm just blind to it. Maybe it does change something. Maybe any change is bad and the status quo works but the forum software is gonna get updated anyway. I don't know what that entails but I agree with the point that people can be sensitive to minute adjustments... and they're coming anyway

I agree with you! I am just trying to point out the dangers of allowing these types of reactions. Imagine if you thought that a post you made was okay, and it got rated dumb by the community for something you can't even understand? You just wouldn't post again! Or vice versa, somebody responds to that post and it gets a load of likes... Great way to kick new users straight off the forum. There is little edge cases. But overall, if they just implemented a like feature you see on every single forum. It wouldn't be that bad. I was talking about an upvote and a downvote react, just like reddit! that's a bit different.

Digital reaction feature isn’t so bad as long as you never return to your posts before moving on to new ones.
