You're right. It's not a good record. It's a great record. It’s compositionally solid, unique, and an evolution of the BoC sound. In fact, I've never heard anything like it. And that's what Boards of Canada are known for. Opening your ears and opening your eyes.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Now I have opened the mouth, and said mine.

You mean instead of Pete?
Yeh just a joke reference.

The live percussion on Dayvan Cowboy is just wrong.

i wasnt going to bother even posting, but i dont see how you not like this album. this has to be arguably the finest work the duo have ever come up with. i havent felt this way about any piece of music since mhtrtc came out. if you want to listen to the same sounds time after time from the same band go buy some orbital albums (no offence to the hartnoll bros., i love your music) . BoC are continuing to develop their sounds in new directions which has shown since twoism. i must admit the first time i heard the beginning of chromakey dreamcoat i was a little shocked. but it works. i really loving satellite anthem icarus, peacock tail, and tears from the compound eye at the mo and am sure will be with me for the rest of my life. this album in my opinion was well worth the wait and ive recommended it now to several people who all but one thinks its f*ckin incredable, except for one just who likes it, but reckons its a grower, so he'll be converted soon enough.
if someone played this album to me without telling me it was BoC, id still love it just as much. i think its a shame you dont like it, but i hope it grows on you. in the meantime, go buy some better stereo equipment and go get your ears syringed at the doctors. that should do the trick

Ha -- er, it's a little hard to believe this is true when, in your original post, you wrote "sorry guys, but I have to compare it to older work."
Anyway, TCH fits nicely into the BOC oeuvre. If one looks at each piece of an artist's catalog as exactly that--a piece--one might enjoy each one for different reasons, having a better appreciation of the whole rather than a competitive stance, knocking each release against the other.
And considering the wealth of material BOC has recorded, they could probably release a record for every mood and feeling. This one certainly has its place and a number of beautiful sounds. And speaking of sounds, the guitar fits in effortlessly. Had they not been so subtle with it, people would've been equally bothered, I'm sure.
You're so smart.

Ok, you caught me out, but having re-evaluted my opinions, I geninely don't think it's fair to compare all new stuff to old stuff.
As for the comment about needing my ears syringed by Hexagon Son, touché, turtle.

dj_todos wrote:Deffinately a 'grower'. Think about it this way. Youve listened to the likes of MHTRTC and Geogaddi for ages now and appreciate how damn good they are. This then gives you an expectation for follow up albums. I must admit, like yourself, on first listen I was probably expecting a lot more. I was hoping for nice big dirty beats and kids laughing for which there hardly isnt. You can clearly see the acoustic angle which everyone is talking about on the album. Its different. TCH has deffinately grown on me and I love albums that do that. I can totally appreciate the genius and work that has gone into album. The more I listen, the more stands out and you notice different things as you become more familiar with the track. Tunes that you didnt like at first can start to become your favourites after 2 months or so. I think this will happen. You have to give the album a chance. Its no MHTRTC but thats the idea. Its is still a fantastic album.
completely agreed
I'm not sure what I was expecting when I bought it.. chromakey dreamcoat surprised me, only the second track and guitar? it grew on me, and then when there's another prominent guitar part in hey saturday sun I realised I really liked it.

Dude. There is NO WAY that is live percussion. That stuff is so heavily edited and pitched and... what were you thinking!? But if you figure out how to play that, I will give you a jelly bean. Maybe even a whole bag!!

hehe...
dude. that is a live drum track chopped and arranged. i can't think (off the top of my head) of them doing this before, at least not so obviously. not sure if it could be considered 'wrong', but it sure caught me off guard when i first heard it. also used a bit in 'slow this bird down'.
after just streaming the tracks a couple times off the bleep site, i picked up the album yesterday when it was released. i've listened to it a handful of times over the past two nights at work as well as a bit driving to/from. it's already grown on me quite a bit and by the end of the night i was *really* enjoying it. i grabbed it from the car just now, burned one, and sat down to listen on headphones. blown away, everything settled perfectly and i heard the album for what it was. absolutely amazing, i don't think i'm disappointed in the least. well, i'm not overly impressed with 'farewell fire' but that's ok. like some others i guess i miss their clever use of speech samples, but maybe it'd detract from the overall feel?
either way, olie is off his rocker. this album is 'boards' all the way through. just pretend they traded one of their samplers for a guitar maybe?
[also - is it just me, or does 'constants are changing sound like a cross between Adam Ant's 'wonderful' and (go ahead and laugh, i sure did...) Motley Crue's 'home sweet home'?

as for the album, after several listenings - i absolutely love it. sure it's hard to digest compared to the earlier releases, there's alot of differences between this and MHTRTC/Geogaddi/etc. i think the only track i don't really care for is the last one, it just sort of hangs there not doing much (and wtf is with the 3+ minutes of silence tacked onto the end?!). i guess i'd say that it's their 'sounds most like it was done on a computer' release, though that could be wrong. just doesn't seem to have as much 'depth' as their other releases(?).
It's not silence. Crank up the volume.. there's sound till the very end of the track but very very low volume... it's a very long fade out... quite symbolic for a fire slowly fading away...

Well thanks for the jelly bean offer Disavowed, but I think you need to keep them for yourself to get through those cold lonely winter nights in whichever obscure part of the world you live in. Those are blatantly real drums, and jbuonacc's point about this sounding like the most 'made on computer' release by BOC is totally valid. And farewell fire? I think this is the song that I have the biggest beef with, it's the closing track on the album (if you discount Macquarie Ridge) and it's over 8 minutes of directionless noise, hardly the best choice for an outro.

actually, i sort of withdrew my comment about the album sounding 'flat' after listening on a better system. after listening again last night i think it sounds quite lush. but yeah, 'farewell fire' doesn't do much for me at the moment...

I get your point here... I was in two minds about this topic a few times.
I had a premonition that TCH would cause topics like this, which is good because it's great to discuss a certain object in my opinion. Unfortunately there are always people who don't respect the opinion of someone else.
The only thing I like to add is:
Respect someone's views and try to be open-minded.
