But it's hard music to listen to, for sure. You have to be in the mood for it, and if it comes up on your random playlist you have to constantly explain it to people.
I had my headphones around my neck one night at work and they were up really loud when Gantz Graf came on my playlist and my coworker was like "wait, are you listening to construction noises".

They're not for everyone, I like what you said about faces emerging from the patterns though. I have a really fucked up sense of rhythm, like I hear beats between beats in what seems like a nonsensical way, and I feel like autechre is really good at hitting these hidden beats for me (BoC and squarepusher sometimes hit them too though, but not to the crazy extent of autechre).

OK, much better! Thanks for pointing me at that track.

I should perhaps elaborate. I certainly don't hate Autechre. I just find alot of their work, especially the later stuff, cold and clinical. That glitchy, compressed, jack-hammer sound just leaves me cold. Guess I need a 'choon' after all? Silly of me really considering I love drone, which let's face it, you can't exactly whistle to

I definitely like some of their music, Amber is great, but I don't know.. sometimes it feels a little try hard? like they're trying to be overtly technical and intricate for the sake of it. I respect them as pioneers and musicians completely; I guess I just like something with a little more soul. However, that is not to say I dislike abrasive music, I definitely do.. I just can't put my finger on it with this band..

I might be heckled for saying this, but to me it seems dated in many ways, this glitchy, programmed industrial abstract sound they have going on. I guess at the time it was necessary, like most movements are, but its often what comes after the pioneers which has the most refined and interesting elements.

I love Autechre and I love Boards of Canada. In my opinion, their styles are quite different - I enjoy their music equally.

Autechre and BOC are similar in the sense that both managed to carve a niche that's pretty much entirely of their own. The difference is that BOC's appeal aims straight for emotional memories and references to the past, while Autechre is a purely stylistic affair. There is something unique in everything they put out. When Oversteps came out, it was mindblowingly different from everything they had done so far, but it was still 100% Autechre.

Untilted was the first album I heard from them, and it was the first album that showed me what electronic music could be. I'm still strongly attached to that album, and maybe it's my fanboyism, but Autechre's music provokes very palpable and tangible emotional reactions in me. And that's probably because I'm aware that emotions are all created in my head, and not carried by the music. Their music affect me because it's so confrontational: it's just as willing to break conventions and standards, particularly regarding texture and rhythm, as it's willing to adhere to them, especially in harmony and melody. They're not afraid to touch familar ground and build on it, and that makes their experimentalism even more radical.

My best advice to any of you is to listen to the Garbage ep. If you don't like that then you can safely say Autechre aren't for you. Such a classic record.

I presume you know about this ambient leviathan?

the other 3 tracks are just as astounding

That was really nice, it's this sorta stuff I don't find appealing at all:

I agree, excellent way to get a headache. I really like some Autechre but a lot of it just hurts my brain.

Ipacial Section actually does have a nice melody you can whistle to, if you're good. Untilted is the best album of the Confield era I think...

As for Autechre vs. BoC, I'd say that Autechre are close to the mentality of Amiga demo groups - technicians doing their own thing and pushing the limits. Maybe they take the antihumanism of early synthpop bands to extremes (meaning those bands that a, strived for a certain facelessness because nobody should care about the people behind the music and b, sang about telephones and buildings), but they aren't explicit about it (which is probably is part of it all.) They're like one of those anonymous techno acts, but without the dancefloors.

BoC, on the other hand, remind me a lot of that Front 242 interview where they said they work like journalists, making collages with the news. But instead of letting it at "what you hear is what you get" they play around with it.

I couldn't get into Autechre a couple of years ago, but right now I'm listening to all the stuff chronologically and absolutely loving it. My fav so far is this one from the first Peel Session:

What does this prove? You be the judge.
Want to compare the 2? Look at this picture.
Does it mean anything? No.

Also, guess what songs I used and win a pencil chewed on by me!

Just a guess:

Autechre - Gantz Graf
BOC - Pete Standing Alone

Don't judge me, man! I just badly want that pencil!

Funny because this might be my favorite Ae track...The song takes a whole different turn around the midway point and becomes one of the most entertaining pieces of music I have ever heard. I treat the "Tinkering" sounds at the beginning as a giant buildup to something great.

One thing to remember about Ae is to never judge their tracks by the first 30 seconds of noise. each song generally unfolds into something really special, most notably on Untilted.

Entertaining or just capricious for the sake of it?

Im not sold, don't think I ever will be.. I respect it all the same though.

Turquoise Hexagon Sun

You should have chosen Wildlife Analysis -- then I could have done a '...or should that be "Waveform Analysis" HAHA' joke

Not sure about the Autechre just now... So that means I get half a pencil, yes? I'll take the end that hasn't been chewed.

Fredd-E, that's the exact same thing I thought when I heard that track, which is one of my favorite AE tracks. Those flutes are very Boccish indeed.
