Quite funny that is.. most of the time Double Figure and Spokes are the albums peeps like the least. Double Figure is also my fav and Spokes is a very good second. I guess I like them more because they are less accessible and therefor have longer playability?

oh, I wouldn't know about that really. Double Figure was the first Plaid I heard years back. Then I subsequently tried to get their other releases and give them a listen but turns out they wouldn't do anything for me. Double Figure has a certain vibe that goes throughout the entire album. Also I found I could somehow identify myself easier with that record than with any of their others. They managed to pull of some really beautiful melodic tunes on that one. I might try out the soundtrack they wrote for this movie that got mentioned here though. Maybe there's something to cherrish for me there.

Double Figure was the album that got me into them too. I now think that Rest Proof Clockwork runs it a pretty close second for my affections though.

This is important. Listen to them slowly. One album, repeatedly, at a time.

Most of their albums are fun, but Spokes goes a little deeper and more sublime. My favorite track is Zeal.

Yeh I kinda agree here. I started with Temple of The Transparent Balls, Bytes, then Spanners then found earlier stuff then onto Plaid releases.

Let's not drag The Black Dog into this topic. Plaid isn't comparable.. well only to Spanner perhaps. On this record you can hear the influence of Ed and Andy better than ever before (their change in style), it also become clear why they split up after this record.

The (current)sound of The Black Dog is way different.

Lets talk about plaid some more!

I got trainer i think about two years ago, then immediately ordered bytes. I eventually got around to checking out not for threes and i thought it was pretty good...
then one day i decided to put it on again and it just clicked for me. i have since gotten ahold of all their main albums on mp3, including spanners. the one that really jumped out at me as the real masterpiece was double figure, which isnt a surprise, because it seems thats what most people on here are saying.

So i ordered double figure on vinyl, and my copy came in last night. I must have had exceptionally low quality mp3s because the sound quality, and production on this is absolutely breath taking, and noticeably better. I ordered not for threes, p brain and spokes, cant wait for them to come in!

The artwork for double figure also wicked cool and worth seeing on a physical release. it looks like it was photographed off of a computer screen and the whole thing has a really cool texture to it that isnt apparent on any of the pictures i've seen online. on the inside there are these fuzzy conspiracy-like snap shots of the double figure logo creepily showing up in all kinds of weird places. i love shit like that.

Once i get paid im ordering rest proof clockwork and spanners. I've only given spanners two real plays through, im excited to delve into that one deeper. How does the rest of the early black dog catalog hold up? Temple of Transparent Balls and Parallel? Is it worth shelling out the money to get them on vinyl? Or are the re-releases on CD a better deal? I'm kind of bummed that i missed out on the new black dog release while it was available on 3xlp... but thats life!

I think plaid is just the type of melodic electronica that i need during this BoC drought. I feel so silly for passing over plaid all these years. Not to mention the music is just so beautiful and fun that it really comes through on shit weeks like this one. The other thing i love about plaid is the fact that most of the songs are very accessible and catchy, but there is an extreme level of care and detail put into it that one could easily gloss over. I think they mask their complexities more than the other big warp bands.

double figure is fucking awesome, does anyone know if there is some sort of story or concept behind this album? it has a very narrative feel to it, just like geogaddi.

Great! another Twoismer who gets into Plaid

Thedisavowed recently noticed the beauty of them almost in the same way as you did.

Can you imagine why I am amazed that a lot BoC fans still haven't heard them? Back in the days it was kind of normal for me to check out every Warp Records artist out there.. (I still do although I don't like any single artist of Warp anymore.) Especially Aphex Twin, Autechre, Boards of Canada, Squarepusher and Plaid which seem to be the IDM superstars. I guess I'm getting old and forget about new people entering the scene.

i am definitely a new comer to the scene, my interest wasn't really peeked until probably 2005 or 2006 when campfire headphase, untilted and chosen lords all came out. So Boards, Ae, and Aphex were my gateway drugs... although I knew about Aphex back when Come to Daddy and windowlicker came out. I got around to squarepusher and a lot of other great musicians soon after and I was hooked! I think the main thing is that my local record store only had Trainer by plaid, nothing else. So I got Trainer back then, and it is damn good, but also sounds so dated. If I had heard not for threes first it would have been a different story I think.

But yeah, it is true, Plaid and Boards share a similar melodic/nostalgic vibe, it's really doing the trick for me these days!

Of course! Excellent, a fav of mine. I like hearing their older stuff and then being able to hear what new artists (newer music) is directly inspired by certain Plaid tracks. It seems their influence is spread around a bit.

If you haven't checked out 'Spanners' --> Black Dog, you MUST check it out. If you like Plaid, you'll love Spanners. Its seriously amazing stuff. My personal favorite is the last track on Spanners, called 'Chesh'.

I just recently decided to check into Plaid, I've fallen in love with the track Itsu. Can anyone recommend an album to start off with? I find it difficult to approach groups that have a lot of material.

Start off with Double Figure. I think it's the most approachable and "catchy" of their albums.

I always recommand to check them(or any other act) out chronological because you will be dragged along with their development as well as you will grow along with their sound.
