Excuse my ignorance of US tax, but does this happen often or is this unprecedented? Because on face value this sounds like a pre-election giveaway/bribe to me....

And what would the bribe be for? Bush can't run again. I'm voting Obama anyway.

Very true. The Republicans would still surely benefit from being seen to give a tax cut/rebate a year or so before the election though, surely? Tax cuts/rebates pre-election is hardly new, and certainly not exclusive to the US. Just an observation really.

Will be interesting to see how close Obama gets.

Well yeah, I guess, but I don't think most Americans are really going to feel inclined to show any gratitude to the republican party for this. It's not like they're doing it just to be nice - there are other reasons that benefit the government. I'm guessing that for most Americans this is more like a "Well it's about time!" type of reaction.

I don't care if they personally wrote me a check for a million bucks - McCain and Huckabee are not getting my vote because republicans are 99% Christian zealots.

Cause they're retarded....Actually they borrow money out of each citizens paychecks and then give some of it back annually, so they aren't really giving it away-just giving it back. There's also some whackos who say that in order to function properly we must have such a large debt, that we have a debt based economy. Meanwhile, I'm waiting for the dollar to fizzle out and be worthless. I hate politics, economics, etc. (mostly because i don't understand it at all)

And I spent my tax return on my Radiohead ticket, and the rest on rent and food. I haven't bought groceries since. :?
