ok then lets take another example. again, Mogwai has half the amount of comments posted on their profile as BOC, yet they tour and interact with the fans all the time. they used to have a q and a section on their webpage and they would answer 20 plus fan questions a month. who knows, maybe it is still up...

Beatles songs are pretty dang short too. I wouldn't attribute that all to the shot interlude songs though. People are just liking BoC and it's sweet! I am pleasantly surprised to see Autechre up there knowing how long and ridiculous many of their post Tri Repetae to Untilted songs are.

if i was being cynical i would say that the mysticism and hermity image have made boc more popular, not less.

I only met one person who liked BoC, and he was from Germany and I fell in love with him temporarily.. The semester ended and I never saw him again!
Also, I was at Sears, in the Tool Department, and I heard BoC on their stereo.. I nearly peed! I doubt anyone else was as excited as I was.

I haven't met a single person who knows boards of canada and I live in a college town. But I have introduced them to more than a handful of people who have become big fans.

Nobody around me even knows what "idm" is. Anytime I play a song, it's usually classified as "techno". I have a friend who I got into idm and BoC right when I first heard them, but otherwise nobody really knows/has heard of them...which can be kind of a nice thing too.

somewhat unrelated but I can't stand when someone asks me what kind(s) of music I like and when I respond with "electronic" their face usually drops and I have to explain to them that electronic music doesn't necessarily mean techno trance house BS.

I hear you mate! This is highly annoying.
When I was in college and started to seriously get into this sort of music sometimes I was asked that very same question. Usually I replied by name dropping some acts just to see if there is any positive reaction by that person, but then all I got is some headshaking and a stare as if I was some sort of weirdo. Which put me into loads of awkward predicaments. Even today I mostly keep my tastes to myself.
Now only my closest friends know about the music I listen to and sometimes I can make them listen to that very same stuff but they are mostly into Nirvana and Red Hot Chili Peppers etc...
what can you expect with such basic tastes. :p

How many MySpace friends someone has is a terrible indication of popularity. Hell, I have 176 friends. About 6 people know my music.

Has anyone ever been asked what they're listening to, and when you respond with the track name, they say "Oh, I've never heard of them"?

I more often would respond with the artist, so I have not had this issue...although if the person inquiring was clearly aware of the artist I might respond with the track name.

Hi Oliver,
well, at least you have someone to hear BoC with... in my case my beloved brother can't stand a single song. He says they just do Game Boy sounds... and he is the person nearest to my musical tastes around!
He introduced me to Portishead, Radiohead or Herbert, and there are lots of other bands we both like, so I can't complain, but in terms of electronic music in a strict sense, we're two worlds appart.

As for your web, there's some interesting work in there, nice pics!
I'm afraid I don't understand any german though...

Still waiting for the first person who makes a remark about my boc shirt. Oh well, you can't blame folks since it's not the most accessible music and you have to look actively to find their stuff. I don't really mind either to be honest

I think these guys (Boads of Canada) redefined music, so I bow to them.

I believe I've gotten no more than 5 comments on my BoC shirt since owning it for at least a year. Since... at least a year. We have: That kid I met at a Portland Timbers game who I later saw at the Daft Punk concert in Shittle (some of us Portlanders know Seattle better as that), my brother's old childhood friend, that guy from Hewlett-Packard who is as into them as any of us, my cousin-in-law, and that kid today who told me his brother owned the same shirt.
