First IDM CD's I bought were Tri Repetae and Geogaddi. So perhaps we're pretty similar in our base IDM roots, yet maybe I got a darker introduction to Boards from the start. What do you think of Autechre's new direction compared with that classic album?

going back and listening to tri repetae after not hearing it for a while was a rewarding experience. When i first got the cd, i remember thinking the music was pretty repetitive, and it was hard for me to get into. But now that i'm more familiar with electronic music in general, it's obvious how expressive and melodic tri repetae is. personally, this and LP5 are my favorite Ae albums even though they are pretty different. when you look at chiastic slide, the gap between TR and LP5 is bridged. I wonder how much further they could have taken the ideas on tri repetae. even when i listen to their later stuff, especially untilted, and their live stuff, i can hear echos of their old sound... it's just a lot less assessable. i'm pretty happy with the direction they took after chiastic slide, because at that point the whole dark, skam records sound had sort of been perfected on tri repetae. I think if i had to choose between anything after LP5 and tri repetae, i'd pick tri repetae. But in terms of new ideas and challenging the listener to think differently about music, quaristice (and all its brothers) is a very successful work of art. it makes sense to distinguish everything prior to LP5 and everything after LP5 but for me the progression is a natural one... but I still like tri repetae more... right now at least.

that post was a lot longer than i meant it to be... but i think the short version is that there are things i love about the old stuff and things i love about the new stuff. and i think they could fuse them together to make something awesom (LP5 and the EPs before it might be the best fusion so far.) quaristice was good, but it wasnt the fusion i was expecting... god autechre makes me ramble...
