That's to say, has it been a case of it's helped you adopt techniques and strategies so that you are more comfortable with social interaction and situations you would have found difficult before? Or is it that you find other "geeky and oversensitive" (I don't really understand what you mean by that TBH) people on the internet and you can relate to them and so find some comfort in knowing you aren't the "only one"? Or is it something totally different? I have to be honest, this has somewhat piqued my interest...
You mean you don't identify with these things at all?
I guess helpful is ambiguous here, depending on what you see as progress.
I think some people will never learn to adapt in a way that makes their efforts worth while. Then it's just better to make do perhaps.

I can identify with that.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't have a beef with the internet. It brings me porn and "free" music. (let he cast the first stone now...) However, I've encountered students that are a couple of years younger than I am and I feel like they haven't gone past the threshold of how bad/unreliable/dangerous the internet can be, or rather, seeing it as a solution to real problems. It's probably my middle class, white upbringing that brings out the cynicism, but for as much "good" as its created (relationships between otherwise unconnected people/nations, and outlets for "socially different" people (i mean, look at what i'm doing now, posting psuedononymously on a message board), access to knowledge, to name a few) I still wonder if we're better off without it. I realize that to abolish the internet (which I'm not calling for) would be a misguided (?) effort, but I wish some people that I knew saw it the way I do, which I think is akin to some kind of religion.

I suppose what I'm getting at is that I grew up as the weird strange kid who listened to metal and jungle and wore weird charity shop clothes and shit, the achetypal "outsider" I guess. But having grown up without the comfort of the web, so to speak, I had to face my fears and interact with people who I felt uncomfortable around and deal with situation that's I found quite scary sometimes, but I came to realise that what made me different is what made me special and I learned to use it to my advantage and make it work for me rather than feeling crippled by it. I'm not trying to come off like I'm vilifying anyone and every case has to be judged on it's individual merits, but I've known too many people with huge potential who ended up getting left by the wayside and worse because they found it the easier otion to "make do", and it saddens me becasue a lot of people deserve better in and from their lives but it can seem insurmountable to change or adapt, and it seems to me that the internet can be a great enabler of that.

wrong. the internet was created years ago to become the forum for the world's next great Cool Kid Contest, in the most abstract and bizarre bid to see who is cooler than who humankind has developed yet. so far, everyone is in last place.

I've only had it a few years and where I can definitely see the benefits you have people like my mates nephew who spends like 5 hours just sat on Facebook and Myspace and probably 4chan and it's kinda sad because when we were his age we were out drinking 20/20 on the swings and hanging about the chippie and just dossing around and making our own entertainment.
Agree totally with this.

Ha ha! No - I grew up south of the border, so 20/20 it was.
