I find it the easiest to escape to, I suppose because the mental imagery it conjures up is more overtly claustrophobic and 'evil' if that makes sense. It took a LOT of listens of Music Has The Right to figure out how dark of an album it was, and I guess that's why it's my favourite. Like, the meaning of every BoC album to me is a long kind of trip which you can either sit back and enjoy as background music or really pick apart to notice subtleties. They're totally interpretory. Geogaddi to me stands as the one which definitely has a disturbing overtone to it which I can stick on to really be spooked by. It requires a lot more concentration to pick apart the spookiness of other releases.

I don't have a seriously developed idea of its meaning. I highly doubt the Sandison brother have a highly developed meaning either.

But there must be an emphasis on Earth or nature with the "Geo" part of the word and I would think an eclectic childlikeness with the connection to Incredible String Band's Koeeaddi song.

Geogaddi is definitly my favorite BOC album. it reminds me of when i was a young child, interacting with everything, being confused by the world and trying to make sense of it all.

To me, Geogaddi talks about how mankind is waging war with nature, how we are destroying it. But in the end, nature wins. And this victory results in the complete removal of man from Earth. It also brushes on the scary side of childhood, especially growing up around the cold war. Things can be really scary and really amazing as a kid.

The prefix "geo" jumps out at me, in light of what they have stated in interviews and with regard to the track names. There's a pretty big emphasis on math throughout the album - Music is Math, Gyroscope, The Smallest Weird Number, a is to b as b is to c - so I think of it simply in terms of relating to geometry, or math in general. The hexagonal pattern of the album cover also factors in here for me. I think they just really appreciate music's relationship to math, and it feels like some tracks are meant to be audible expressions of the golden ratio. I might have read that in an interview but I'm not sure.

"Geogaddi" also sounds like a little kid butchering the word "geography," so maybe it's also intended to capture that sense of childhood innocence and wonder. Therefore, I think the title is a fusion of the ideas of math and childhood, which are two themes that have pretty much always been prevalent in their music.

Regardless of what it means, it's really hard for me to listen to this album like I listen to the others. It has always spooked me out and made me feel really uneasy. The samples are unsettling at times, and as beautiful as the tracks are, the instrumentation can be really bleak and overwhelming. Some tracks feel like they very clearly capture the darker elements of childhood, especially Beware the Friendly Stranger - it seems like it's trying to sound innocent but ultimately sinister, like an actual stranger trying to lure a kid into his trap. I can listen to almost any other album or EP from start to finish, but I usually only listen to Geogaddi a few songs at a time.

Also, I neglected to introduce myself. I won't have much time to post here, but have been lurking here for a bit. it's a great forum.

And back to Geogaddi, I saw a documentary the other day studying the tuvan people of Siberia, and their music. some of you have probably already seen this video: film I saw talked about the tuvan people started mimicking the sounds of nature (animal noises, rivers, etc.) in order to connect with it, and "become" the spirit of the animal or thing they mimicked. They began to make instruments from the parts of deceased animals, and their music revolved around connecting with nature. I have never seen such an intimate relationship between man, nature, and music. I was absolutley fascinated and my mind made me think of Geogaddi the whole time. I will post the link to the documentry, because it is available online somewhere. I think it was called "Enviroment, man, and music" or something on those lines, and I believe it was put out by a "Brandenburg Media" or something like that

Well, yeah. I mean, most people's opinion on it hover around the cycle of life to death, spirituality, energy, psychedelic usage, history and I've even seen time travel, as far-fetched as it seems. However, I'd yet to hear this sort of analysis of it.

I can see some relation to nature, waste and destruction, with things like Energy Warning, Dandelion, etc. but overall it seems like most of the album points towards transcendence of some sort, possibly dying and finding some sort of afterlife that is not what was expected, or a stage in evolution. Of course, these are just my feelings on it.

I can see that. I'm just glad Geogaddi is a "come to your own conclusions" album. I love how BOC does that with most of their works.

Geogaddi... It's a journey within yourself and within reality, slowly tearing themselves apart and blending together. It's about becoming so open minded that there are literally no limits or borderlines. Realizing that everything is one in the same. It's realizing your greatest fears are only yourself and what you create for yourself. There are dark moments in this album that have quite literally changed my life when it comes to fear. Crossing through the tracks of Geogaddi, you will sometimes get some feelings of your mind even possibly playing tricks on you. To me Geogaddi is something that not all people can appreciate because of simple and narrow open mindedness. Once you have opened your mind to it, it will lead you to the end with an epiphany. Geogaddi means whatever it means to you. For me Geogaddi means to grow and become one with life and everything beyond.
