I liked to watch National Geographic documentaries as a child. Other children said they were boring, that they would rather watch a cartoon. I liked them. Sometimes there were women without shirts on in them. One time I was watching one with women without shirts on and I got an erection. Father came home and saw this, and yelled at me. He took off his belt and took me over his knee and hit me on my bottom with it. I screamed. He hit me so hard I bit my tongue through until it bled, red spots on the brown carpet. When Father saw this, he got me a washcloth, cold from the well water, and put it in my mouth to help stop the bleeding. He asked me if I understood what I did wrong. I said yes. And then I asked if I could watch cartoons instead. Father ended up erasing the National Geographic tapes I had, taping over them with sporting events, and, after he got his camcorder, home movies. Father died last month.

That was the goal. Being a private investigator wasn't the best paying job in the world, but it certainly was one of the more interesting ones. My client was a suit, ex-CIA by the way he handled himself - not interested in bureaucracy, not demanding but charming like some of the political types, but a kind of haplessly bumbling, albeit overall successful in getting what he wanted, like the vaccuum cleaner salesman who knocked over potted plants. Friendly enough guy, but kind of gave me the creeps. He approached me with an offer to do a little bit of finding for him for well over my normal fee. Normally, a case like this would stink of either trouble or a setup, but a brief check into the Kaini Industries business records showed that it was a small medium sized company doing nothing more than circuit board assembly on contract, so I took it. When I asked him what name I should put on the invoice, he shook his head, passing me a briefcase full of cash and said he'd pay the other half when I had information for him.
I met up with my guy in the local P.D. over breakfast and asked him to pull some tax records on them for me, seeing as they'd be in the public files, then headed out to Redpoint.
Redpoint had been a good neighborhood back in the 60s, with the shipping and manufacturing facilities keeping busy and keeping people employed but then the jobs started moving east and the mood started moving south. A few of the old unions were still together but the work just wasn't there for the volume of people they had.
The Kaini building wasn't very large, just a small plant. I knocked on the door and asked the receptionist if they wouldn't mind showing me around, seeing as I had a prototype that I wanted to get produced and wanted to know that the job would get done proper. Her giant brown eyes glared at me and somehow, I guessed, that wasn't how business was typically done at Kaini.
