Digging up this topic as I happened upon something very interesting that may or may not be related to this track...

I'm currently re-reading Susan Sontag's encyclopedic 'On Photography' - a collection of wonderful essays, tremendously broad in scope, written with all the conscientious zeal Sontag was renowned for.

The range of artists and works, referenced and compared throughout is considerable; but one image that caught my attention this time around is 'Spectre of Coca-Cola' by Clarence John Laughlin:



From the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston:

Laughlin was fascinated by the sometimes disorienting aspects of everyday things, in this case the spectral image encountered in an old Coca-Cola sign. The effect of the raking light falling across flecks of rust on the corroded tin sign conjured up for the photographer a ghostly image of a more benign past.

The photo could also be interpreted as a visual metaphor for free-market capitalism which tends to favour policies designed to serve the interests of huge corporations rather than the nations’ citizens.
