Got a whole bunch of VST and AU instruments. Mainly use impOSCar, Alchemy and Prophet V (although the latter is shockingly flaky).

I prefer using hardware synths recording into the DAW.
Juno 60, CS1x, Tetra, Mono Evolver, Blofeld.

BTW, I didn't read any offence into the "Nice Try" comment. Thought it was a funny aside regarding the lengths we would collectively go to, to discover what is in BOC's studio.

I want a Tetra. 4 Mophos for the price of 2.

For me, polytimbrality is a key factor in why I want an instrument.

Asus laptop with 4gig ram and Pentium dual core at 2GHz each. It's served me well tbh and the only reason it ever struggles is through my inability to work towards keeping cpu down until it's raped the project. Using Reaper =]
Was really devastated the other day though. Took my laptop up to a friends to see how things sound on his dynamite speakers and it quickly became apparent that something sounded off. In fact... the whole top end was missing on everything =[ Pretty devastated. My current speakers are ported and the bass is clouded and poor at best. I always try and overcompensate for this but didn't realise that there was not top at all! Looks like a job is in order to finance some new shit how speakers. Really put off producing till I get them :s Anyone else been in this boat?

I wouldn't really stop doing what you're doing just because your equipment sucks. I worked on a Pentium II with nothing but a taperecorder, my qwerty keyboard and some freeware vst's. Sure it sounded like crap, but it was fun:D

pretty much all soft synths like PolykbII, Dimension Pro, Rapture. Though I use a Nord Lead1 rack sometimes (I know, it is also soft .. well it is not analog...but sounds quite good for "not analog").

behringer truth 8" for monitors. cheap headphones.

True. I think I'm past the point of stopping tbh. Just ready for the next phase which ultimately involves saving up, getting speakers which don't lie to me and taking it from there. I think moaning about equipment is pretty lame and faar too many people fall into the trap of just buying new expensive shit without realising the most important ingredient is time. For me this isn't the case. I want to learn to self master(control freak) and to do that you really do need top speakers.

Gear is really cool and I have a fair amount of it but and I say this with total sincerity I would have given anything to have even the minimal set ups 20 years ago some of you have now.

FL and Reason are no slouches. Just because they aren't as "pro DAWish" as Logic/Protools/Nuendo doesn't mean anything. I know people who make fantastic music in FL. Lusine is one. And Reaper is great because it is so cheap. I bought into logic back when it was version 7 and 900 freaking dollars. And Ableton back when it was version 4 and waaaaay cheaper than it is now.

Seriously never be ashamed of your tools. There is far more shame in owning some great gear like I have and not having learned it yet. My spectralis has been eyeballing me for months now.

I've used logic. I've used cubase. I like them, but I like the fluid workflows of Reason and FL. When it comes down to it, it's about making music and not what you make it with. In the end I'll chose Reason or FL studio. If you're handy with EQing, compression and mastering, then forget anything else anyway.
A truly creative mind will shine through any toolset.

I really wish none of these were platform specific, I think I would like FL for some of its sequencing ability.

well hot damn! This is great news. I want to be able to do some drum sequencing and I find ableton drums blah and ultrabeat convoluted though it sounds great. and renoise just too confusing.

If it supports Reire then I think it would be indispensable.
People always neglect the fact the Rewire totally defeats DAW vs DAW arguments.

It is a pain managing a project split over 2 DAWs though. I've done a couple of Live/Reason combinations and didn't enjoy the process. How I would love Reason to support midi-out so I could sequence my hardware synths with it...

How do you like the DX7? I have been thinking about getting one but have been unsure about which version to get V1 or V2.
