Seriously, everyone take a fucking reality check, right now.
Get fucked wanker.

This is just what this thread needed. I like Deadmau5 and Skrillex makes some pumping tunes. Don't hate for the sake of hating something just because it popular or "simple". A few years ago, someone on Twoism took a big shit on me because I said liked Mylo.

Aphex has probably influenced every single person making electronic music these days regardless of what subgenre(s) they put themselves into. If not directly then most definitely indirectly. It doesn't make Skrillex some...musical genius simply because he loves AFX.

My only complaint is that he's surface level electronic.* And having liked dubstep for a while, I can't say I like it anymore in public because everybody assumes Skrillex. Which isn't the case. I mean if I am at a house and somebody is playing Skrillex over the stereo I won't mind. Nor am I going to be all fucking hipster mumbling about how shit he is under my breath.

You are fucking vain if you think he's namedropping the IDM greats to try and score cool points with our crowd. He's name dropping them because he likes them. Damn dudes. Seriously?

How would you feel if somebody told you that your liking for Boards of Canada was not justified because that person thought your own music was trash?

At least he looks cool. Unlike most IDM artists.

*Though to be fair AFX is pretty surface level too considering the internet age when it's easy to find out about him.

Turquoise 70, don't let them make you feel guilty for calling them out on that.

yeah.

Owl City (remember that Postal Service soundalike from a few years back?) namedropped BoC as someone who influenced him.

I still don't like his music.

If anything I was more annoyed that it pretty much copied Postal Service beat for beat.
But once again, my opinion, not hating because it's popular, one of my favourite songs of all time is Beyonce's Single Ladies, so I'm all with you on the whole popular doesn't necessarily equals bad thing.

I'm sorry everyone, but I agree with this and I felt as if it needed to be said sometime. Whenever I think something that reeks of an asshole, I erase it from my mind immediately because I'm a loser.

I think he's name dropping because his music shows no sign of boc influence. Now, I dont mean it sounds nothing like boc so he can't like them. I'm saying that the work he's released shows no sign that he's fully appreciated/understood the effects of both these artists. Taking boc for example and their main boards of canada production techniques of perfectionism, obsession and imaginative mood and creating albums of fully combined work which flow seamlessly. None of this is even attempted by skrillex in his work which suggests to me that he hasn't fully understood or appreciated Boc. Regardless of genre you can still pull these things off.
I think he's likely to be a small time listener at best and therefore name dropping to pull in a new audience.

I like Picasso, but it doesn't mean I'm going to cut my fucking ear off.

Or maybe he makes music on his own terms instead of some standard set by another band. And name dropping because he's a fan of their music.

I like it when the sensible people start coming out of the woodwork. Well put.

Personally I liked the snarky post on the first page. It hits home well. But for some people you have to spell it out to get the point across.

I'm not going to continue arguing the point because I genuinely don't care. I just felt it was worth putting across. I apologise for my scepticism.

That's a very subjective statement. I've heard only a couple Skrillex tracks, but they made me grin. It's unfortunate that we start caliing other musicians "shit" on this board, just because they've attained fame or their music is semi-famous. What about old deep-house tracks that Josh Wink used to spin?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z54ayrpylrA (Winx : How's the Music)

Is this shit because it's minimal? There isn't a lot going on, but it invokes an amazing feeling in me. Can we all be a little more objective when it comes to peoples music and their expression of their own creativity?

I'm tired of people shitting on other people.

Well, I like Mr Potato-head, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna drive a forklift-truck into a fucking mountain of spaghetti.
