Grimes is off the hook! Check her new video!
She is shortlisted for the Canadian Polaris prize, I hope she gets it. Best album I bought this year.
Genesis is pure genius from her Visions album. Please support this Canadian artist signed to 4AD.

First off, a disclaimer: I'm definitely not trolling and not looking for an argument.
I'm just genuinely confused...
I listened to several tracks by Grimes, desperately trying to find any sort of positive quality to her music that I could hold on to, and found none.
Music, arrangement, vocals, lyrics... they all sounds very void, flat, and unimaginative to me. Her vocal skills are superb, that much is clear, but this alone is not enough.
In the very unlikely hypothetical situation of someone asking me "Would the guys over at Twoism enjoy this?", I would've gone "Hell no!!!" with the utmost conviction I'm capable of.
What's the appeal of her music for you?
P.S. Not sure why I get so wound up sometimes when I dislike certain artists that seem to be hugely popular with people who otherwise mostly share my taste and sensibilities about music. Same with Actress, Grouper, Portishead's last album... I guess I just don't want to miss something because I've not found the correct way to approach and explore it.

Agree. Very over rated IMO. Hipster flavour of the month.
I disagree completely. She does everything herself. Composes the music. Writes the lyrics. Can perform live playing and singing at the same time. Great image. She, in my mind, is more like what pop music should be like. I can't put my finger on what specific qualities I like about her music, it just appeals to me and I really enjoyed the Japanese release of her latest album "Visions", with it's bonus tracks. Halifaxa is also a great album. I just like good music. It doesn't have to be particularily groudbreaking for it to sit well with me. Good on 4AD for picking her up.
Not flavour of the month, BTW, she has been around for a while now... say 3 albums worth of stuff at least!

I get the image and the visual artist stuff. I think that's cool. But the music just doesn't get me excited. It's well produced and there's an interesting vibe. However I think it's her vocal that bugs me the most. She sounds too child-like and whiny. An annoying voice nearly always ruins my ability to enjoy some types of pop music.

This, pretty much. She always brings to mind what chart music could sound like if people put more effort into finding music -- accessible, yet creative and interesting.

I think I have the privalege of living in a country that is so isolated from the majority of the
Western world that I am able to appreciate something without being completely jaded because
I have not been exposed to the hipster scene etc. it's like people laugh at me on here for saying

I feel that maybe some of you should give her another chance. Normally I don't listen to music with vocals but if I do this is what I tend to like. When the artist is doing something unpredictable with her/his voice and steps out of the "normal frame" if you know what i mean. I think that artists like Grimes, Beach House and St. Vincent are good examples of this. This is some of her older songs that i think deserves a listen:

Every time I choose to pour some time into her it only takes a couple of seconds before I end up with the same song (Genesis apparently), I've seen two different videos for this track, so I got the feeling this was the song describing her sound the most. I get the appeal, I just dont think "banging on the black keys of a keyboard" is very interesting (it was something I did when I was 8 saying "look, it sounds Chinese!"). The first video was just her being taped playing and singing, so that gave me some time to hear the music. Uninteresting. Inspired, but uninteresting.
The second time (right before I posted my op), same song, different video with these stupid "ooh look how strange I am" costumes (thats the lady gaga part). Every artist making a buck nowadays is trying to be strange...even artists I like. Its getting old. I get the love for fashion but this is getting old.
Ok, so I haven't exactly delved into the realm that is grimes, but sorry, if you make a video with an obvious budget, I take that as a business-card. This is a crappy business-card, I am not interested.
Also, pouring alcohol is not a requirement for making a macbook run. That's what charcoal is for!

I know this is a female electronic artist, and I agree we need allot more of those, this just isn't a step in the right direction. this is imo.

Ok, this is better. Genesis is nothing like any of the other tracks on the album and certainly does
Not represent her sound as a whole. I respect your opinion on Genesis though.

I've been listening to Visions like it's the last album on Earth and I don't even own it..I just listen on Spotify and watch the videos from it on YouTube all of the time.

I also really like her personality. She's very normal in interviews and puts her all into her performances.

I prefer Halfaxa personally, as I think the dreamier, more lo-fi sound and more overt experimentation just appeals to me more. Though, that said, as electronic pop goes Visions is great to me: accessible yet adventurous, and sexy as hell, too.
