in response to what about brian eno's music seems dark... just my opinion. there are some really cheery, uplifting tracks on apollo, but some tracks are very dark as well. same as on ambient 4. his first ambient, music for airports would be good. I also agree about stars of the lid.

That is an absolutely fantastic interview. Thanks for posting. Seriously guys, you should all read this. A great insight into the process of making improvised music.

It is a brilliant interview. I've seen The Necks many times and met them a few times too. Love the bit about waiting for silence "crowd willing" before they start to give it more impact.

Satie and Bach are ones I often put on.

Choral music is also very good for study.

Also, I have one of those "Chill Out" Compilations you get in hippy shops, the one I have is called Tunnel Chill vol.1 and 2 and despite the reputation this sort of music has it's quite a nice listen, nothing too difficult to divert your attention from study and not too hippy either.

I like Pause by Four Tet for studying.

Some of Alva Noto's work is wonderful for this, especially the Xerox albums and all of his collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto.

And another recommendation would be Machinefabriek, who can do things with his guitar that no one else seems to do! However, although almost always his stuff is ambient, sometimes his textures can suddenly start demanding too much attention and get distracting. But then again, studying requires occasional breaks, so this can serve as a good reminder.

The usual stuff, St. Germain, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Adani & Wolf, Telepopmusik, Zero 7, Air, Praful. Stuff like that. Used to love study while listening to that kind of music.
